That he ascended is referred to in several New Testament texts by several other apostles. What is taught to us is: Jesus ascended in his resurrected body from this earth to the heavenly realms in the visible presence of about 500 early believers. While they watched, two spiritual beings appeared to them and gave them two instructions. They were first to stop gazing into heaven and to get about the work he had left to them. They were secondly to know that Christ is coming again in the same manner that we saw him depart. We are to live expecting his return.

Since the Day of Ascension, we have celebrated this momentous event and remembered what the two heavenly agents told us. The exact location of our Lord’s ascent is given in scripture as upon the Mount of Olives, and almost to Bethany on the eastern slope. Since that hour the church has raised a monument on that hill in Jerusalem to mark that location of his historic departure. The church has taught every generation that we expect Christ to return to earth and many expect that he will return to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus’ ascension also adds a theological truth to our faith. He rose in the flesh. In the incarnation God united himself to humanity. Jesus is both God and man – the God-man. In Christ, the God who is spirit united himself to creation, or physical matter, and became both Creator and creation. In the ascension, he takes that human nature into the Godhead, permanently uniting God and humanity. So, the man Christ Jesus is permanently united to the Godhead and in him man is united in God. From heaven we look for our resurrected Jesus to return with all of his holy ones. This is a mystery.

In Jesus, human life was elevated to the righteousness of God. True Christianity now finds the center of its truth and hope in the incarnation. God’s life has been united to our life and we are now by his Spirit living in union with the Creator of everything. What began in Jesus is now the possession of all who are united with Christ. Those who are in Christ have crucified the flesh with its lusts and been raised to newness of life in resurrected living.

Those who receive him have literally united their existence with the living God. Being united to him we participate in the life of God.

As we live in union with him, we are to be made perfect as he is perfect. The change is called transformation. This transformation will not be complete in this world (age) but is to go into eternity.

The word “perfect” makes us very uncomfortable. It has the feeling of being 100% or absolute. In his great sermon my Master said (in English) Matthew 5:48: You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. What we are not often told is that the word Jesus used has shades of meaning. For example: the word “perfect” as it appears in our scriptures is complete for where one is at in the journey of life and development. A perfect five-year-old is not a very good eighteen-year-old. We expect a different level of maturity from a person of 50 than we do of someone who is 20.

God, Jesus says, is teleioi = complete, and therefore as his children we are to be grown-ups who are lacking in nothing – teleios – those who have the nature of their parent or source - God.

When one is filled with Christ’s Spirit they are full of God. But as that same person grows in grace and knowledge their capacity in the Spirit expands and they experience greater life in God. No one is ever 100% nor is anyone 100% non-Christian. We are all being moved from glory to glory in the Lord, the Spirit.

Hebrews 2:10: For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering.

2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

In him who died for us is a life romance of growth and discovery.

Jesus is Lord – and we are through his life.
1. In the resurrection of Jesus we see the clear demonstration of the power of the true God. Ephesians 1:19-21 God was revealing that life can return after it has ended.
2. The resurrection proves that Jesus is an act of him in his self! John 10:18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father."
3. The resurrection proves that Jesus the Messiah is divine. See Romans 1:4: the Jews crucified Jesus Christ because, to them, he was blaspheming when he said that he was the Son of God, or equal to the Father. But, in the resurrection to life Jesus demonstrates the truth that he is who he said he is.
4. Our salvation depends on our faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Romans 10:9, we are told that "if you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Here is the core of saving faith.
5. The resurrection of Jesus proclaims him as a true prophet. Everything Jesus taught was true, including his great promise in John 6:40, "Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
6. The resurrection of Jesus secured our justification. Paul preached "Christ died for our sins and he was raised for our justification," in Romans 4:25.
7. Our own resurrection depends completely on the resurrection. 1 Thessalonians 4:14: "We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."
8. We are part of his resurrection. We read about this in Ephesians 1:19-21, as well as in Romans 6:4: "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." We are already living as new creations and resurrected people.
9. His resurrected life saves us: Romans 5:10 If while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved in his life.

It could for example be Jewish or Islamic. If theology or truth is Christian it centers upon the singular revelation God gave of himself in human history, which is Jesus of Nazareth. Therefore, it may be correctly stated that true Christian theology is really Christology (talk about Jesus). No one comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14: 6). In him the Father is seen (John 14:9) and accessed. God was in the Messiah doing his ministry of reconciliation of the cosmos (II Corinthians 5:19). It is in this reconciliation that we believe history centers itself. The life of God was embodied in Jesus of Nazareth (in his person). Christ is the creator of all that is and is the meaning of all scriptures and in Ephesians 1:9-10 "He has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth."

The message of the church is that all reality is found in Jesus. We now worship God in and through him. It is at the name of Jesus that every human knee is to bow and declare him Lord. The original writers of our New Testament scriptures were Hebrews; when they said ‘Lord’ they knew that it meant God. In Jesus’ hour no one spoke aloud the holy name of Israel’s God – Yahweh. They substituted ‘Adonai’ or ‘Lord’. (Romans 10:9, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.) Philippians 2:11 - Every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. John 8:24 - “I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I Am.”

By having Jesus we have God’s spirit. When we are united to Jesus we are united to his resurrected life. His spirit now becomes the life of the true Christian and truth that the church exists to teach: Romans 5:10 - If while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved in his life. Colossians 3:4 - When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. II Corinthians 5:15 - He died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. Romans 14:8 - If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we belong to the Lord. When you have Jesus you have everything. You cannot go beyond him. He is the reason the universe exists. He is life.

Christianity has struggled throughout its history with the natural pull in the human heart between ambition and the call to surrender self and learn to be small that is found in the Gospel. In the great revival that the Holy Spirit gave the Christian church, a classic story of this struggle is told. After the American Revolution, the established church of England was no longer popular in the new country, so on September 1, 1784 the Methodist conference of the Episcopal Church in England voted to appoint Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury as the new superintendents of the Independent Methodist Episcopal Church in America. In 1788, Francis Asbury changed the title from “General Superintendent” to “Bishop.” The move shocked John Wesley. The idea that any man would call himself bishop seemed out of harmony with the true spirit of Holiness. Wesley wrote a scalding letter to Francis Asbury in America saying, “You seek to be great and I study to be small… Men may call me knave, but they shall never call me bishop.” John Wesley was an ordained elder, Presbyter of the Church of England, but until the day of his death he was called “Mr. Wesley.”

This same tension entered every form of Christian expression including how we preach in worship. The early guidelines for ministry were simple: 1. Preach in the open-air or where ever allowed. 2. Pray extempore - and do not use written prayers as your form. 3. Form organizations and societies and welcome the leadership of lay ministers and preachers. 5. Refuse to sit still but sit up in the power of God and proclaim Christ. When Mr. Wesley sent Dr. Coke to America, his message that was to become the heart of true holiness was simple, he told Dr. Coke, “Give them Christ.” The simplicity and power of the New Testament church calls all of us to wrestle with the issues of how to simply reflect that Christ calls us to have nothing but him in the present world.

They are convinced it is not the word of Jesus that puts them off, but the superstructure of the church that other humans build on top of his teaching; that often includes the doctrinal elements of what the church preaches.

Jesus, in our hour, has been re-packaged and demoted to the lowest common denominator where he is all love and kindness with almost no cross. When the bible speaks of following Jesus, it is proclaiming a discipleship, which will liberate mankind from all human made dogmas and oppression, along with anxiety and torture which can afflict the conscious. It does not free us from the cross of Calvary. When Jesus said, “follow me,” he means “follow me all the way to the resurrection.” Without the crucifixion, there is no resurrection. The call of Christ to “follow me” is a call to come and die, and to move beyond our own selfish ideas and opinions. In the call to Calvary, is a call to embrace the entire life of Christ. It is far more than simply being blessed or finding what we are after. It is the surrender of self to the full life of God.

To be a follower is to be a cross conformed and cross bearing person whose life values and ethics are being formed by the Christ of the middle cross. The world outlook of the true disciple is through the lenses of Christ on the cross. Every day the follower walks in the spirit of the crucified God. This is the new union with our Master: Philippians 3:8-11 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

The Pastor's Pen ~ Dr. Gary Henecke

“On a spring morning in about the year 33 three men were executed by the Roman authorities in Judea just outside of the garden gate that led to the road west toward ancient Caesarea.” [1]At the request of the Hebrew temple hierarchy, the governor Pontius Pilate hanged the three publicly outside the western gate of the ancient city of Jerusalem. Two of the three, of whom the world has little memory, were terrorists. The third we profess to be the divine agent of the only true God – the Lord of the Hebrew covenant. It is what we profess that magnifies this execution. This event and its climactic finality at sunrise on the first day of the next week shook all of human history as its accompanying earthquake (at the time of the death of Jesus) and its Sunday morning aftershock (at the moment of resurrection) shook ancient Jerusalem.

To the Romans the death of Jesus of Nazareth was but one execution among thousands deemed necessary to bring former autonomous peoples into submissive unity to the new world order. Jesus is condemned and hanged as “King of the Jews.” This of course met with strong resistance from the temple rulers. Caesar’s authority was not the issue for the religious priests and learned teachers who were assembled under Joseph Caiaphas; for them the issue was theological rather than political. This man claimed to be the Son of God and Son of Man. The defining of orthodoxy and the issue of what and who Jesus was became the reason for their zeal. The priests could embrace a foreign monarch but not God as defined in Jesus. They found it easy to cry, “We have no king but Caesar,” but could not embrace the truth that the God of their ancestors was revealing himself in this Jesus of Nazareth. To do so would call for the reorientation of all of their life convictions. They were able to comprehend that Jesus was a threat to the temple system and to religion, as they had known it. The issue for them was a crisis of doctrine and, in that, a crisis of life meaning and established order.

The death of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha was a meeting place of theological conflict and world politics. For Christians the revelation of God in Jesus is the culmination of all Israeli covenant and goals. In Christ the church defines the ancient Hebrew descendants of Abraham and the prophets and interprets their message. In the crucifixion is found the final act of incarnation and ultimate revelation and fulfillment of Divine redemption. Therefore any teaching, which purports to be Christian teaching, must be an explanation and proclamation of the great God-event-revelation. If God is to be known he must be understood in the dying and rising of Jesus. The core of all we call Christian thought must be brought both to ponder that historic moment and to harmonize with that moment to one’s life - not simply as a historical event but for the content and meaning of the Divine revelation – for life beliefs.

The Pastor's Pen ~ Dr. Gary Henecke

We are just two weeks from Easter. Let us all remember: the church exists because of the gift and life of Jesus of Nazareth. When the church is true to her mission, she proclaims and lives out the life and mission left behind when the Lord ascended to where he had been before. Our lifestyle and our attitudes as well as why we do anything comes from the life of Jesus. Central to who Jesus is and what he has taught, is his death on the cross. The cross of Christ and its meaning are the “nuclear fact” or the very core or the essence of church. To be Christian is to be a person of and in a community of the cross of Christ. The apostle Paul was not simply making statements but uttering absolutes when he said, “God forbid that I should do anything but preach the cross of Christ.” And again “May I never glory in anything except the cross of Christ through which I have been crucified to the world and the world to me.”

Since Jesus was condemned and executed on the cross, he did not die naturally nor did he die accidentally. His death was decisive as he embraced the cross. His death was on purpose. John 10:18, Jesus said: “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again; this mission I have received from my Father.” Every believer who wants to understand the deep things of our Lord will eventually come to the cross. It is here that true discipleship is defined. Jesus said to us that if anyone would be his disciple, he must take up the cross and walk with him. This taking up of the cross is daily, or if you please - day after day. It begins in the surrender of self and it goes into the unity of the discipled believer with his/her master. The historic death of Christ has become the spiritual standard for every believer. He gave his life for us so that we in turn would surrender our lives to him and for us life is Christ.

One of my favorite thoughts regarding Sunday mornings comes from Psalm 122:1: "I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.” There's nothing quite like the moment each week when God's family comes together for corporate worship. I hope you always come to this moment with a spirit of anticipation and expectation. God inhabits the praises of his people. What a wonderfully marvelous and mysterious thing that is!

FIRST REPORTS FROM OUR HONDURAS MEDICAL TEAM:

Over the past two days we received the following reports from Alex Zukowski:

Today was our first day of work at a church in a city called El Progreso. Dr. Hall saw 116 people and we passed out a whole bunch of medicine. Tomorrow we're going to another church in another city, Wednesday Thursday Friday will be up and villages in the mountains (pray for cool weather) we're having a blast, you can just flick the tarantulas right off of the suitcases. On Friday we'll be at the place where the high school team will be in June. God is good! The team

Pastor Jerry, Wish you were here! We had "baleadas" for dinner. It's like a huge soft taco. Dr. Hall is amazing - sharp all the way through the day which is hard to do in the heat. The local church folks have little money but huge faith. We've been seeing over 100 people per day. Wednesday, Thursday & Friday we'll be traveling to more remote churches. Jerri McGarrah has been sharing wonderful devotionals about the "peace of God" as spiritual warfare. We are agents of God's peace and favor. This is a messed up world but God’s grace abounds all the more! Tomorrow, with our bare hands, we'll kill 5 chickens for dinner, just kidding it's only 4 chickens! It's pretty safe to say that everyone considers being here an honor. Til next time!

The team.

What great reports! These are your prayers and your contributions at work. This is the healing ministry of Jesus in the 21st century being extended to "the least of these." Please allow me to say again, as I did several weeks ago:

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO GIVE TO OUR MISSIONS PARTNERSHIP! AND TO THOSE WHO DON'T: YOU CAN START GIVING TODAY! Call the office or fill out a pledge card - it is never too late to get started. There is no way we can touch our world with the compassion of our Lord without your help. There is no investment you can make that will ever yield more in returns than to make it possible for people to KNOW Jesus - to know his saving grace and his loving touch. May God continue to bless our team in the days ahead.

NEXT SUNDAY: ANOTHER WEEK WITH DR. REEDER AND JANET:

What a great morning we enjoyed with the two of them. We even had a guest vocalist: Louis Armstrong. They will be with us again this coming Sunday to talk about process and transition, helping us get our hearts and our heads into the proper frame of mind. Please remember to fill out the pastoral qualities survey that was made available to everyone on Sunday. Fill it out and bring it with you this coming week. Anyone age 15 or older - no membership required - who loves Salem First and cares about her future is welcome to fill one out.

A Letter Of Love To My Salem First Family

Last night I resigned as the pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene. I wanted you to hear this from me so you know my heart first hand.

The Letter To The Board

January 17, 2012

To The Salem First Church Board,

Eleven years ago last October we were given the call to come and be your pastor here in Salem. Once we felt God’s definite direction we packed our bags and announced, “We’re going to Salem.” Today, I submit to you my resignation as Senior Pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene. Just as I have always “known” concerning major moves in my ministry, I know that it is time for me to ask for your understanding and blessing as I leave this church that I have so dearly loved. This has come as a result of much prayer and evaluation.

Together we have journeyed and grown. I am not the same person that arrived here in 2000, and neither are you. Today my journey has come to a fork in the road and I must follow God’s calling to give myself to leading the congregation at Deer Flat Free Methodist Church. It is my request and prayer that you will release me and then commission me to follow God’s directives for my future.

I will forever be indebted to the Salem First family. It’s been a true adventure together, and one thatI will always cherish. While being your pastor, you have loved us unconditionally, prayed for us, and stood by us through the good times and those that weren’t all that good. As board members, you have served the church faithfully and walked beside me as my friends and advisors. Throughout my life, I will say with pride, “I was the Pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene.”

As you know, across the years this church has had some outstanding leaders. As you search for the next Lead Pastor, you will be constantly in my prayers. The God who brought you some of the best pastors, is the same God who will bring you the next spiritual leader for this congregation. As that happens, together we will rejoice.

My love continues,

Pastor Dave

Some Background For Making This Decision

Before heading into my Sabbatical back in the summer I had been in a wrestling match over what God has wanted me to do, considering whether I’ve brought the church as far as I feel I can. As I sought God and prayed over this, and as we measured our ministry here and looked at the future, we felt that God was prompting our hearts. I have looked to go nowhere, in fact, I have made numerous attempts to push this away and to distance myself from this call, but God has continually brought it back and kept it in front of us. This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life. In the past few weeks there has been a transformation happening in my heart as I have sensed God releasing me from my responsibilities here at Salem. Just over a week ago, God made extremely clear His direction for our lives. It was a defining moment for me. While I w as grateful for the answers to prayer, I have died a thousand deaths over this moment because I hate “good bye’s.” However, Jer and I have come to believe strongly that Salem First deserves a leader who can help the church achieve its true potential.

Why This is a Difficult Decision

1) I love this church. For eleven years I have pastored you, loved you and cared about you. I have had the privilege of baptizing many of you, doing numerous weddings, dedicating your children, welcoming many of you into membership, and walked with you through times of loss. We’ve grown together, prayed together, laughed and cried together, and taken steps toward maturity together. My life will never be the same because of our relationship.

2) I love this community. During these years I have had numerous open doo rs of opportunity to get acquainted with people, businessmen, professionals and many of the people who live here. I’ve served on boards, spent time at the hospital, been involved in community functions, and met fellow pastors. It’s a wonderful community. I have made many friends, and I hate to leave them.

3) I love our team. This has been a unique and special group that God brought together to serve Salem First. I have found lots of fulfillment serving alongside each of them.

What I Want To Say To You

1) Let’s make our last weeks together special. Let’s thank God for our journey together and be together as often as possible.

2) I am committed to the future of this church. Jer and I have given our all while we’ve been here. You will remain in our prayers.

3) Show your loyalty to the church. This has been a great church for 100 years. God will provide you with a leader. Now is the time for you to support the church with your attendance, ministry and finances. We have a great Staff that stands ready to continue leading the church during this transition. They will shepherd you well. Salem First is ready for a compelling future. Determine to stay faithful.

4) Make this a time to grow closer to God and one another. Great churches during a time of transition unite. Give visible love and support to the Church Board as they search for a new pastor to lead this church. God has given us a wonderful District Superintendent in Dr. Stan Reeder. He will be very committed to help find an excellent leader for Salem First. He will be working closely with the Board. So, encourage one another during these days.

5) Release me to obey God’s direction for my life, with your blessing and support. Your love, encouragement, and pr ayers have always been a wonderful gift to us. We need them just as much now as we always have. Give your love and loyalty to the next Pastor like you have given me. He will have my total support, too.

In Acts 13, the church at Antioch placed their hands on Paul and Barnabas and released them to minister to others. Everywhere they touched lives, they were an extension of the local church. That’s my desire…to be released and sent out by you and the Holy Spirit, to touch lives, and together rejoice about the good things God will do.

I love you,

My Dear Church Family,

It's Christmas time and I'm sitting here reminiscing about the amazing ways that God has been so good to us. As we've spent this month considering what our world would have been like if Jesus had never come, it's staggering when you stop to think about the radical difference that He's made because of His willingness to step off of the Throne of Heaven and slip so quietly into our world. If Jesus of Nazareth was just a mere man, then His birth would provide no more than intellectual conversation for theologians, slight interest for historians, or unbalanced fascination for any followers. And, if Jesus was only another New Age incarnation of the Christ Consciousness, and not the "fulness of the Godhead bodily", then He did, in fact, deserve to die on that cross for the sin of blasphemy. And, if Jesus is only one of many of gods, and not the Only "Way, the Truth, and the Life", then He would not be the Omnipotent God. And, if Jesus is not Almighty God, then the ancient prophecies predicted a lie.

But, if Jesus is the "I Am" that appeared to Moses on the backside of the desert, then His Advent as a real, human baby, was necessary:

To fulfil prophecy, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14);

To provide an atoning sacrifice for the sins of mankind, "But with the Precious Blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot" (1Peter 1:19);

To provide a mediator between God and man, "For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (1Timothy 2:5);

To provide us an example of how we can and ought to live, "...Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an Example, that we should follow in His steps" (1Peter 2:21).

But, if the true benefit of the Christmas Story is the coming of Jesus in human flesh to "redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for Himself a peculiar people," then we need to be reminded that the Little Baby in a Bethlehem manger was named Jesus, by His Father, because "He shall save His people from their sins." So great is His Salvation, that He not only would redeem us from the "wrath to come," but the Spirit of Christ, Who is the True Spirit of Christmas, would secure for Himself a wonderful change of heart in us that would cause loving obedience in His people. Because He did come, we don't have to imagine what our world would be like if He hadn't come.

Don't forget, we have 2 great services planned for this weekend: Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday morning at 11 am.

Thanks for your great love and amazing faithfulness. Your prayers for Jer and I, as well as the rest of the staff are so deeply appreciated. I'll look forward to seeing you this weekend!

From us to you, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I'm issuing a Call To Prayer this Sunday evening at 6 pm, for the people of Salem 1st. We will meet in the High School Room of the new building. I'm asking each of you to sacrifice an hour this evening as we head into perhaps the busiest time of the year for each of us. It's been a while since we were last together and I believe that this is a good and needed time for us to have some face time with the Father. Please give this priority. I believe it will be DIFFERENCE MAKING. The needs are great and your prayers will bring about the IMPOSSIBLE.

Thanks for making this a priority!

I am thanking God for you today and praying that each of you will have a wonderful time tomorrow with friends, family, neighbors, or even the family pet. You guys have been such a blessing to us and we hold you in our hearts. Here's a few things worth your consideration.

1. THANKSGIVING OFFERING - As you know, we have a big goal of $390,000 we are targeting so that we can complete the remaining pieces of our New Building. This will enable us to use the Gym, Kitchen, finish the touches in the Lobby, and do a bit of a facelift in the Children's area. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and your sacrificial gift or pledge. You'd be amazed how much you can give systematically over a bit of time. If you haven't participated in this project yet, this is the perfect time to get on board. Why not consider a pledge? If you'll be away this Sunday, you can always respond the first Sunday of December.

2. COMMUNION - We will be sharing in the Lord's Supper this Sunday during our worship services. It's always special when we have a chance to break bread together and remember the price that was paid for our salvation by none other than Jesus. So, prepare your hearts and let's remember together!

3. ON A SIDE NOTE - Most of you are aware that I do a radio program with my radio partner, Charlie Schiffmann, an Orthodox Jew, each Sunday evening on KPDQ 93.9 FM. The program is called: THE TEACHER AND THE PREACHER. We have had several Teacher and Preacher evenings where we've invited listeners to give us a chance to meet them. And in both Salem and Portland, these have been special and blessed times. We are going to be in CORVALLIS Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the Public Library. Charlie and I have been invited to speak that evening on Israel, and it's open to the public. Any who might be interested in going, please feel free to join us. Gary Cummings has offered to drive a group down from the church that evening as well. If you're interested in catching a ride, please let us know in the office this Sunday.

As you get around the table tomorrow, I hope you'll remember many of those who are going through their first holiday season having experienced a painful loss. It has a way of totally changing the experience. Also a word of prayer for our troops, our leaders and our church families that are under stress these days. Your prayers make a difference. Thanks for letting me count on you! See you Sunday.

Truly Grateful,

With November comes great memories and a great Holiday season. For me, it catches me a bit off guard as I wonder, "Where has the year gone?" It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating New Years, and now I'm looking at getting tax information together. One of the great verses of the Bible that seems so fitting is from Paul to the people of Ephesus, "Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." 5:15-16

As I shared with you Sunday, these are days of GREAT opportunity for us as a congregation. We are submerged in a sea of neediness. It's all around us. And, we still believe that JESUS is the answer for people's lives and situations. This is where our ability to capitalize on completing our Building Project will pay big dividends in how we can better serve both our congregation and our neighborhood. Thanks for your ongoing partnership. There's no way we could do this without you. God has been so faithful to help us, and your efforts are being used by Him to make a true difference.

So, as we go through November, let's give some serious thought and prayer to what we might do for a SACRIFICIAL Thanksgiving offering - either pledge or cash. I believe that God will do something SIGNIFICANT as we step out in faith. You guys are the best! I'll see you Sunday. Come expecting a great day!

"Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Acts 14:17

What a great reminder. As King David so often commented - the result of his years in the open fields of Israel - God is never without a witness when you consider the work of His hands, His creation all around us. From the beauty of our Willamette Valley to a star-studded sky on a crisp, clear night, God is everywhere apparent.

END OF YEAR NEEDS: THANKSGIVING BASKETS / BENEVOLENCE FUNDS

This is the time of the year when the gap between those who have and those who don't seems especially striking. Our cultural traditions tend to celebrate excess this time of year. Everything from a loaded table at Thanksgiving to a tree loaded with gifts at Christmas. For many - probably more than we'd think - a turkey on Thanksgiving or multiple gifts under the tree will only be possible with help from others. You can help make that possible in two ways.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS: Over the next several Sundays we will be collecting non-perishable food items - must not be opened or expired - and contributions for the Thanksgiving baskets we deliver to families. Our goal is to provide as many baskets as possible, beginning with those in our own church family, extending what we have available after that to others in need.

BENEVOLENCE FUND: This fund is in desperate need of replenishing. Periodically we put out a note for help to our SS classes, but some of you may not be aware of this ongoing need. Gifts should be clearly marked “Benevolence Fund.” Bertie and I oversee these dollars. Our goal is to help, in small ways, as many as we can. We do this by limiting the amount we make available to any one individual or family. We are not equipped to handle requests for car payments, rent, or mortgages. We will sometimes provide assistance with bills by offering to help with a payment if the person can raise a certain amount themselves. We provide vouchers for food. Our priority is the church family because these are the situations with which we're most familiar. UGM and the Salvation Army are better equipped to understand and meet the bigger needs of people. Because we regularly refer people to them we support both organizations with regular gifts. Thanks for your help!

SAFETY/SECURITY TEAM DINNER: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 6:30 pm, LONDON ROOM

If you have an interest in this area, you're invited to an informational dinner on Wednesday, November 16, at 6:30 pm. Many of you are already on this team and may not even know it. If you volunteer in our parking lot ministry, or serve as an usher or greeter, you're already on the team! Our goal is to bring as many of those people together, along with others who may have an interest, for an informational session where the primary goal is simple: AWARENESS. Our goal is to do everything we can to ensure that we're ready for the types of emergency/security situations most likely to happen when people come on campus. If you're going to join us, please let Pastor Rich know - he's doing the meal. Thanks!

HOLIDAY ROUTINE: WORSHIP AND CHURCH OFFICE

Christmas and New Years Day are on Sunday this year. As we approach the holiday season, please make note of the following dates, events, and times:

11/23, Wednesday before Thanksgiving: regular Church office hours; no Wednesday evening program

12/26, Monday: Church office closed; Salem Christian Day School closed

Good Wednesday to you all! With Pastor Dave and company just freshly in Israel, you can count on two things: 1) THEY'RE TIRED! 2) HE'S NOT WRITING THIS NOTE! So be sure and pray for them over the next ten days: for their safety, their travel, and they're connection with the Lord as they walk the land of Jesus.

COMPLETE SURRENDER: THE CALL TO A LIFESTYLE

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Rom. 12:1-2

Pastor Dave just finished a series on how we, as Christians, often masquerade. Week after week he challenged us to take off the mask and surrender ourselves to the work of God's Spirit in our lives. This coming Sunday Pastor Marci will pick up this theme of surrender.

The above verse, at least in my mind, is one of the best Biblical pictures of what it means to surrender completely to God. It is nothing short of "self-death"; the setting aside of everything I hold dear about my life in exchange for God's work, and God's will, in my life. No escape clauses, no exceptions, no exclusions, no excuses. It is the means by which God's Spirit is able to both cleanse and empower, at the very deepest levels, our spiritual lives. It is the heart of what we Nazarenes call entire sanctification.

Why is it so important? Because without it we will fail to properly discern the will of God for our lives. Look at the verse above: "...offer yourselves...be transformed...THEN you will be able to test and approve..." Think of the masquerade challenges as they would apply to the life of Jesus.

Did Jesus struggle with sharing his faith?

Did Jesus struggle with worry?

Did Jesus struggle with finding happiness?

Did Jesus struggle with forgiveness?

Did Jesus struggle with giving to God?

The answer, obviously, is no, but many Christians disconnect from the reality of HIS life as they consider the reality of their OWN life.

Jesus didn't struggle because he was completely surrendered to God's Spirit and thus, God's will. 1 Corinthians 2:16 makes it clear that those who are "born again" are given the very mind of Christ. Our capacity for using to the fullest what God has given us will depend completely on our willingness to surrender completely. Give Romans 12:1-2 some time in your prayer and meditation this week. It can, should, and will change your spiritual life.

Remember to pray for Pastors Joshua and Marci as they prepare to share this coming Sunday.

Blessings...
I was awake much in the night. Listened to it rain, got up and checked on the rain, had a visit with Jesus, and then went back to bed for a bit. But, I was reminded again that we serve an incredible God, One who does work the night shift. We're going to be talking about Him as we come together this Sunday. We've got a great morning in store, so I hope you'll come expecting a great connection with The Master.

As you know, we're headed into our 3rd Sunday of October already. Time seems to be in the fast lane. I find my days full and catch myself wondering if I'm caught up in the busy-ness of our times and just giving Jesus the "leftovers" of my day. This is where my own sense of Masquerading comes in. I hope that you've been committed to close the gap between what we profess about our belief and walk with God, and what we actually live.

I'd like to ask you to join me in several areas...

1) Take some time to really pray for our church family. We've got some serious illnesses, unemployed people who are weary of looking, homes that are under attack, daily financial pressures, and much more. However, we've also got a Father who invites us to call on Him. Would you join me in really giving some intercession time for our flock? I know it will make a difference.

2) Take some time to prepare yourself as you head to the church this Sunday. Your prayers for the services, our teachers, staff and volunteers, as well as the preacher, really enables God to move and accomplish His will in our midst in a more meaningful way. You'd be amazed the difference it will make if you come prepared to encounter God.

3) Why not reach out and include someone? There is a world of people who could benefit greatly from an encouraging atmosphere and a word of hope that will be extended. Who knows how God will use your caring invitation in the life of someone who needs to hear some good news?

Please know that you are in my prayers this day. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. THANKS FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE FAITHFULNESS, LOVE AND SUPPORT! You guys are the best!

Be Encouraged!

Good Wednesday to you all! Pastor Dave and I are attending the annual retreat for the district pastoral family. One of our General Superintendents, Dr. David Graves, is the speaker. He's done a great job bringing encouragement from God's Word to us all. Please remember to pray for our district pastor, Dr. Stan Reeder, as well as other pastors you may know. Pastoral families often arrive at these retreats with heavy burdens. Everything from personal family situations to difficult church situations are on their hearts and mind. It's just a few days together but God, in His infinite presence and power, can bring encouragement by His Spirit to help sustain them, just as He so often does for you.

DISCOVER SALEM FIRST CHURCH: INFORMATION AND MEMBERSHIP CLASS

Sunday, October 16 at 4PM on the new gym stage platform. Pastor Dave and I will hosting our next information and membership class, DISCOVER SALEM FIRST! So let me take the guess work (as Pastor Dave loves to say) out of WHAT this is about and WHO is this for.

WHO is this for? This informational class is for anyone interested in knowing more about Salem First Church. You may have attended 2 weeks; you may have attended 22 years. But you share this in common: you've never really had a complete overview of the church with an opportunity to ask questions along the way! This class is informational. It does not obligate you in any way whatsoever. It does serve as a membership class for those who may be interested.

WHAT is this about? It's an informational session that covers everything from what we believe about God to how the church is organized to who's on the church staff. We will talk about our core values and our history as a church. We're almost 100 years old so we have a lot to talk about! The session will last about two hours. You'll be in by 4 and out by 6.

Young or old, new or not so new, Pastor Dave & I invite you to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!

Happy almost October day!! As I considered the change of seasons I thought of these words from the book of Job:

"Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?" (Job 38:31-33)

Who can comprehend our God and, yet, "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" (Rom. 5:8) To understand such love, the gift from Him who is Creator of the Universe! Impossible to fully grasp, and yet He loves us "with an everlasting love!" (Jer. 31:3)

MASQUERADE: A CHALLENGING WORD

Pastor's message this past Sunday was challenging. Whose responsibility is it to reach our world with the Gospel of the one who died for us? The answer is obvious: each of us is commanded by God to move within our OIKOS (our world) and share what God has done for us. If God so loved the world... shouldn't we?

I was struck by the timeliness of his words given a survey released in September by Barna Research. It was an in-depth study of people in the United States that claim to have a relationship with God through Christ. In the summary piece Barna writes the following:

[When it comes to commitment]... "four out of five self-identified Christian adults (81%) say they have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today. More than three out of four self-identified Christians (78%) strongly agreed that spirituality is very important to them. Yet, less than one out of every five self-identified Christians (18%) claims to be totally committed to investing in their own spiritual development. About the same proportion of self-identified Christians (22%) claims to be “completely dependent upon God.” Those figures help explain why a majority of self-identified Christian adults (52%) believe that there is much more to the Christian life than what they have experienced. Without a full determination to live like Christ and for Him, the path to complete transformation is blocked.

[When it comes to repentance] ..."most of the self-identified Christians in the U.S. (64%) state that they have confessed their sins to God and asked for His forgiveness. But the evidence is quite clear that relatively few self-identified Christians are serious [about transformation]... In fact, only about 3% of all self-identified Christians in America have come to the final stops on the transformational journey – the places where they have surrendered control of their life to God, submitted to His will for their life, and devoted themselves to loving and serving God and other people."

This last fact is stunning for what it reveals about Christians and the "church" they present to the world. Absent a love for serving God and people (especially those without Christ) is it any wonder so many on the outside see Christianity and the church as irrelevant? This is why when Jesus was asked about the one most important commandment he stunned those listening by saying the entire law and the prophets can be summed up in two sentences! “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mt. 22:37-40)

It's this "love your neighbor" evangelism piece that's largely missing from the lifestyle of many Christians. And that's what real evangelism is - a lifestyle, not a program - just as Pastor said. Our part is to make sure the lifestyle message is intelligible, credible, relational, personal, and sacrificial. The living Gospel, when it flows from a heart that loves both God and the people for whom he died, has always been a message worth listening to!

CLOTHING GIVEAWAY: TENTH ANNUAL - A RECORD BREAKER!

What a great day! Once again, how grateful we are for the leadership of Linda Neff & Tina Ziebart - joined this year by Margaret Campbell in the organizational effort - and a plethora of GREAT VOLUNTEERS!! By the numbers: 741 participants; 16,200 items of clothing; 705 items left for donation to UGM. If you missed the article I quoted on Sunday, here is the link to the Statesman Journal:

If you’ve got a minute, I just wanted to pass on a couple of things that I think are worth sharing. So, let’s go…

Many of you took the time to respond to the “What’s Love Got To Do With It” card. It was a delight to find that stack of cards waiting for me on my desk as I returned to the office. I was so delighted as I read through the vast number of names, knowing that you committed yourself to reach into our City and hold out the Gospel to those who don’t know Jesus. THANK YOU! I love being able to count on you.

Our Caesarea Philippi, AKA Salem. As I shared with you on Sunday, we have a fantastic opportunity to join Jesus where He’s at work here in our City, and specifically with our N.E. Neighbors. I’m convinced that this Fall can be a great season for Salem 1st. As we target being a 1) Place of Learning, 2) a Place of Belonging, and 3) a Place of Serving, we get to provide significant opportunities that Divinely meet the needs of the people living all around us. So, we’re in for a great adventure. Thanks for being faithful and committed. It’s the only way we can push back the Darkness effectively.

New Series – MASQUERADE. Beginning this Sunday we’ll be taking an honest look at whether we actually live out our profession, or whether we masquerade ourselves, pretending to be one thing externally, but another thing in our walk with Christ. I think you’re going to find the Sundays of this series to be both challenging and encouraging. I hope you’ll feel good about inviting someone to join you.

You guys are the best! Come this Sunday expecting a great Lord’s Day. He’s promised to meet us as we gather to worship Him.

Have you ever heard of that old saying, “There’s no place like home”? Well, we’re back and we’re glad to be back. I can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to seeing you this Sunday. We’ve got a very special day planned for you. We’ll be remembering 9/11 in the first part of the service as we turn our focus on God and His faithfulness.

I’ll be presenting what I believe to be a very timely message for Vision Sunday. It’s a look at our future, and a reminder of why we do what we do. I think it’s going to be a fantastic Lord’s Day, and I can’t wait to be with you. Jer and I remembered you often while we were away. We are certainly indebted to a valued and capable staff, as well as your faithfulness.

September is a great time to move into an exciting Fall season at Salem 1st. God’s got great days ahead for us. So, let me encourage you to remember what a difference you make as you pray, participate, and plan for a new adventure as we follow the Master.

Come this Sunday expecting great things. He’s known for doing Great Things! I count on your prayers. It’s the best thing you do for me. See you Sunday!

Pastor Dave

P.S. By the way, I'll be starting a trek through Ezekiel tonight, and continuing for the next few Wednesdays. If you're looking for a good Bible Study, you might join us at 7 pm in Lower Rickard. Also, this Saturday we continue with our MEN'S - "BIBLE STUDY FOR GUYS WHO LIKE BIBLE STUDY." Starts at 8 and out by 9.

A few words from Pastor Jerry...

Good Wednesday, August 31, to you all! Only 115 shopping days 'til Christmas! Major holiday season has officially arrived. All the biggies - LABOR DAY, THE MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY, THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS! Wow - my stock pick of the week: Hallmark Cards. OK - there you have it. It's why you wait each Wednesday with bated breath for this e-mail. And...it's why you'll be SO HAPPY to have Pastor Dave back in the saddle next week!! Yes - hard to believe but true. Pastor Dave returns to the office on September 6 - to a more safe and sane e-newsletter article on September 7 - and to the pulpit September 11. We'll ALL be glad to have the McGarrahs back. September 11 is VISION SUNDAY. Pastor Dave will be setting the tone for the fall, asking the question: why do we do the things we do? Following that, we'll move into a new series entitled: CHRISTIAN ATHEIST. Thank you, again, for your prayers and your help during the time of their sabbatical.

SUNDAY, 9/4: FIRST SERVICE: TRANSFORMED INTO HIS IMAGE

"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Cor. 3:18

If you're anxious to get a head start on my message this coming Sunday, begin to read and contemplate 2 Cor. 3:7-18. It will be the focus as I wrap up some thoughts I began to share with you last week, and wrap up our summer theme on LOVE. I encourage all of you to ask God for a special anointing of His Spirit as we gather in His presence. Ask him to receive our praise in music, song, and scripture, while we open our hearts to whatever His Spirit may have to reveal. Each Sunday is an opportunity for His family to share a synergy in the Holy Spirit uniquely designed by God to encourage and build His Church. Thanks to those of you that have said to me: I pray for you each week. I am never more in need than in those weeks I'm preparing to bring His Word.

SUNDAY, 9/4: SECOND SERVICE: LIFE IS LIKE...

Pastor Joshua will be sharing from the Word as we wrap the series up this week. In looking at the parables of Christ we are once again reminded that PEOPLE - especially those in need, and those estranged from God - are the focus of his heart. As you consider your own call from God to make a difference, ask for a heart to INVEST AND INVITE. It is in relationships with those outside the Kingdom that we find opportunity to share our own story. It is often in the telling of our own encounters with God that others begin to open up to what God may also be doing in their lives. The recent baptisms are reminders of how powerful these personal stories can be.

SEPTEMBER 4: FLOWERED SHIRT SUNDAY

Don't forget! This week we celebrate God's infinite creativity in nature as we drag the best and brightest out of our closets. Hilo Hattie and Tommy Bahama ought to be paying Him royalties!

EDITORIAL CORRECTION: Pastor GREG

Well, well, well. As hard as I tried, I completely fumbled a key fact in talking about the staff last week. Well, let it never be said that I was too proud to correct a mistake - even if it was honest, and even if I had to put up with all kinds of grief because of it - no, I'm a bigger man than that. Pastor Greg did NOT attend George Fox U. He graduated from Faith Evangelical Seminary in Tacoma, Washington.

READ THE RED AND PRAY FOR POWER! Heard that a long time ago - not bad advice when the red you read are the words of Jesus in the Gospels. I hope you find encouragement in Him this week.

Blessings to you all... Pastor Jerry

A few words from Pastor Jerry...

SUMMER OF LOVE AND A FIRST-CLASS STAFF

"Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." 1 Tim. 4:11-16

Teaching and leading God's people in worship is serious business. As we approach the last two Sundays of Pastor Dave's sabbatical I want to express my thanks to those who've filled in so capably, and take this opportunity to share some things about them. Quite often, when a pastor steps away for sabbatical, he will look for capable teachers/preachers from outside the church to take his place on Sunday. This can be true even if he has capable staff in key ministry roles. In our case, not only did he turn the helm over to me, but he left it to me to arrange for staff to take his place. That kind of confidence speaks volumes for him as well as for our staff at Salem First. My thanks to Pastor Rich, Pastor Phil, Pastor Joshua, Pastor Greg, and Pastor Trevor for taking on one or more Sundays during this time. I have had - we have had - very positive feedback from the church family. The most common expression has been gratitude for the great messages while also expressing thanks because people felt they better got to know some of the other pastors. It is in response to this that I decided to share a bit about those that have taken lead roles over the past two months.

The Church of the Nazarene requires that everyone seeking to be ordained to vocational ministry must have what they believe is a personal call by God on their life. As such they may seek to be ordained as Elder or Deacon. The difference between Elder and Deacon is essentially this: the Elder has a gift and call to preach whereas the Deacon has a gift and call to vocationally minister outside the call to preach. There are qualifying steps to take, as well as educational requirements one must meet. While meeting these requirements a person will usually hold a district Minister's License, one that allows him/her to pastor but requires annual renewal by the district assembly until approved for ordination.

On our staff we currently have seven ordained Elders, one ordained Deacon, and one Licensed Minister. Pastors Dave, Joshua, Trevor, Rich, Phil, Marci and I are Elders. (Pastor Rich was ordained by the Christian Churches, Independent.) Pastor Carol is a Deacon; Pastor Greg is a Licensed Minister moving toward ordination. (We also have a significant number of retired Elders from several denominations, including two retired Nazarene District Superintendents, Dr. Carl Clendenen and Dr. Jerry Manker.)

Pastors Dave, Rich, Phil, Marci, and I have all served as senior pastors. Interestingly enough, all of us also had prior assignments as staff pastors before serving at Salem First. Pastors Joshua and Trevor - both graduates of Nazarene Universities (SNU & NNU, respectively) believe God is calling/preparing them to eventually co-pastor a church plant. Pastor Greg, a recent graduate of George Fox Seminary, was formerly the owner of Legacy Real Estate but felt God's call on his life. Having sold his business he's now a budding teacher / theologian, and Salem First is his first full-time pastoral assignment.

It is an eclectic gathering of people, personalities, and gifts. But all of them share the same call and desire to serve God's Kingdom. Please continue to pray for them. Encourage them, as well, with an occasional word or note. Those small things can mean more than you know.

CRISIS CARE KITS: LOVE IN ACTION

Approaching, as we are, the last Sunday in August we're rapidly running out of time to package and prepare our latest shipment of Crisis Care Kits. As of last Sunday we had donations for about 90 - running a good deal behind the 200 we usually send. It's not too late to jump on board. A $20 bill in Bill King's hand, or my hand, or anybody's hand you trust - is still the EASIEST way to get a baggie filled with all the emergency items. Thanks for caring.

BETH MOORE: BE ENCOURAGED, BE EQUIPPED

The simulcast is two weeks from Saturday. Beth Moore has been an encouragement to countless thousands in her equipping / discipleship ministry. It's not too late to pick up a ticket for yourself or as a gift to someone who might not otherwise go. You can call the church office or see someone at the Welcome Center on Sunday.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND SUNDAY: FLOWERED SHIRT DAY

Some of you have asked about this so Carol and I decided to declare Sunday, September 4, Flowered / Hawaiian Shirt Sunday!! WOW - I can hardly wait!!

Blessings to you all. I hope this finds you encouraged by God's presence as you serve in God's family.

Pastors Joshua, Phil, Rich, and I have spent the last five weeks giving thought and voice to God's heart and God's love. Jesus sums it up with his response to a Sadducee when queried on the most important command of God. He said:

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:57

He keeps it simple for us. A true love of God will always mean a true love for others. When you combine this with Jesus' mission to "seek and to save those that are lost" the picture is clear. The measure of success for God's Church - those truly saved by His grace - will always be their love for each other and their concern for the lost.

CAMP SEASON, GOD'S LOVE & VOLUNTEERS

Pastor Carol is in the middle of JAM camp. 40 kids converged on our campus to explore and celebrate the creative gifts they've been given by God. Music, art, photography - all taught, modeled, and encouraged by 20 volunteers from our church family. Over the past 3 weeks we've sponsored 3 camps - High School, Mid-Hi, and JAM. A total of 140 children and teens attended these camps - an awesome number! But even more gratifying is the 70 volunteers that lovingly served them. Without volunteers these camps are not possible. This, too, is an expression of God's love.

Evangelism studies continue to show that children and teens are the demographic MOST likely to place their faith in Jesus. Once in your twenties the percentages drop dramatically and continue to do so throughout life. Of concern to me is the fact that as our church is aging on one end (our two largest demographics are our two oldest demographics) we are not replacing young families on the other. We are, so to speak, aging in place. Many of our newer teens and children are coming without family attached. Because of this there are fewer parents to join us as volunteers when we have camps, retreats, or trips. It becomes critical for the church family to come alongside these kids as volunteers, group leaders, and mentors..

My thanks to ALL OF YOU who've made yourselves and your resources available to staff and these kids. You are God's love.

HOPE STATION OPEN HOUSE

A reminder! This Saturday is the annual Open House at Hope Station. 2960 Pringle Rd SE from 10:30-2:30. Play structures for kids, snacks, music, and a free lunch at 11:30a (really - there IS such a thing). If you've never checked out what Hope Station does for our community, this is a great opportunity to do so!

Blessings to you all!

We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. (1 Jn. 2:3-6)

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate." (Lk. 15: 22-24)

Two great messages - simple yet profound. From Pastor Phil: I want to know Jesus so I can love like Jesus. From Pastor Joshua: We need to value what God values - He values lost souls.

Our summer focus on love has been both thought- and heart-provoking. To date, four voices have reminded us of one thing: there is nothing greater than the love of God; that which flows from HIM to us, and that which flows through US to those in our world. There is no such thing as a church that does not love. For in that moment, known only by God, that a church begins looking inward to itself instead of outward to a lost world, it ceases to be the church of Christ. The church is you and me. Whatever the beat of our collective hearts, so is the heartbeat of our church. May God give us a continued love for Him, a desire to love like him, and a heart for the things He values.

Up again this week in the first service is Pastor Phil; speaking in the second service will be Pastor Joshua. My encouragement to the family is to come prepared, each week, with an open heart to what God may say during this summer of love!

GREETINGS FROM PASTOR DAVE & JERRI

I communicated with Pastor yesterday - they both send their love and greetings. YOU HAVE BEEN SO CONSIDERATE OF THEIR TIME AWAY!! Thank you. And he...HAS BEEN OBEDIENT TO THE BOARD'S COMMAND TO STAY DISCONNECTED! I told him I was so proud of him - made me want to give him a big hug! To which he said, "It will be an expensive hug - I'm 5,000 miles away." Oh, well - I didn't know - just a thought. Bottom line: they are doing well, grateful for your continued prayers during this season of rest and renewal.

Thanks for keeping the staff in your prayers. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Blessings...Pastor Jerry

A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

August greetings to all of you!! August - wow - didn't we just start summer? Can Christmas be only five months away?!

Speaking of seasons, I'm reminded of these words from God's first psalm: "Blessed is the one... whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." There is a prosperity that goes well beyond what a person may own or possess. It is the prosperity of a life well lived. A life lived in God's presence, ever mindful of His will and purpose. This is the prosperity of treasure that, as Jesus described, is not laid up on earth but rather in Heaven. That is a treasure that lives on into eternity, long after this life on earth is done. My prayer for our church is for a renewal of God's Heart in our hearts; that what He treasures we treasure. "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Mt. 6:21)

MISSIONS PARTNERSHIP: HONDURAS

We have, as a church, made the decision to establish a partnership with churches in a fairly isolated region of Honduras. It also means we've made a decision to give more toward the work of missions than we're asked to give by the Church of the Nazarene. How much more? Approximately $40,000 in the first year. It was a decision that started with a staff conversation, moved to the missions council and then to the church board. There was unanimous agreement to take this significant step of faith.

One of the driving forces behind the decision was a need to engage younger generations in the life and work of missions. Demographic studies by the Nazarene Church showed that younger generations have a heart for reaching people with Christ, especially those most under-privileged and under-resourced. It re-captures the earliest spirit of our church - the "forgotten quarters" spoken of by our founders. They also found that younger generations connect best on a personal level - with a face, a place, a person, a cause. AIDS, poverty, hunger, clean water, education, orphans, social justice - these are the causes for which young people are willing to give, go, sacrifice, and even die.

Honduras will put a face on our missions program. It's a third world country in Central America with myriad needs. Over the next five years we'll begin to personally meet these people: pastors and their local church families. We'll go - some of you in person, some by video - to towns and villages where the church is already trying to address the needs of water, poverty, and education in the name of Jesus. We will bring Hondurans back to be with us - sharing their heart and bringing us a word of encouragement, just as it was done in the book of Acts. These will not be nameless, faceless people for whom we pray - they will be brothers and sisters we know, love, and embrace as our own.

So how will we raise the necessary funds for this year? In several ways.

1) You can make a PLEDGE toward our Missions Project. If you made a pledge for this year, THANK YOU! Just keep giving each month.

2) You can give a GIFT to help us fund specific projects in Honduras. Mark your check or envelope with: HONDURAS. We're already forming teams for construction, medical, and youth projects. If you're interested in going with a team please contact the church office at 503.581.3680 for Roger Schmidt or Bill King. We will be involved in building, compassionate ministries, Jesus Film and youth projects.

3) You can support the THANKSGIVING and EASTER offerings. Twice a year we take a special offering to support our GO TEAMS. These are the teams that will be working in Honduras over the next several years.

4) You can be a PRAYER PARTNER. Commit to pray for those on our GO TEAMS, as well as for God to honor the steps of faith we are taking as a church family.

As Bill King and I met and talked about this yesterday we were overwhelmed by the need and the cost. As we prayed for each other we begged God to help us; to start by giving us faith that would not get in the way of His desire to do something miraculous. This is new for us at Salem First but it’s already happening in many of our larger churches. We are still in a learning mode but we are excited about this step of faith. JOIN WITH US! PRAY, GIVE, & GO!

SUNDAYS IN AUGUST

I thought you'd appreciate knowing where we're headed during August. First of all, kudos to Pastor Rich for a job well done this past week! What a great model he and Danette provide as they reach out to their neighbors.

In the first service we continue with our theme "What's Love Got To Do With It?" And, of course, we know by now, EVERYTHING!

Picking this up over the next two Sundays will be Pastor Phil. Please be praying for him as he prepares to share his heart. Pastor Rich is again on deck for the 21st, then I'll return to wrap up our series with two final messages.

In the second service we begin a new series called "Surprise Party." Taken from the three stories Jesus told about a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son, Pastor Joshua begins to emphasize the need for us to INVEST AND INVITE those for whom Jesus died. Pastors Trevor & Greg will also be teaching and expanding on this theme.

SABBATICAL SKUNKS: UPDATE

Well, here we are about half-way through Pastor Dave's sabbatical and, perhaps, the most amazing thing that has yet happened is this: THE SKUNKS APPEAR TO BE ON SABBATICAL AS WELL!! That's great news! You can begin to pray the skunks are on a longer sabbatical than he is.

I close with this from Romans 8, especially for those of you facing significant challenges this week: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Blessings...Pastor Jerry

I'm ever mindful that one of the greatest benefits of living under the New Covenant is that we no longer must GO to God's House - we are God's House! The Body of Christ - especially His local Church - is the hope of the world. Wherever you find yourself this week, remember, as 1 Peter 2:9 says: "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." Be God's living "House" wherever you are, wherever you go.

PRAY FOR HONDURAS AND THE SLINGERLAND FAMILY

It was great to have Bernie and Rhonda with us this past Sunday. We are grateful for the report of how God is moving in this region of our world. Bernie is our go-to guy as we consider how to most effectively partner with the Honduras churches over the next several years. He's going back to Panama City to begin preparing a possible game plan for our approval. This is not new to many churches but it is new to us. Pray for wisdom and resources as we continue down this path. If you have not made a pledge to our Missions Partnership fund I encourage you to do so. And remember, our semi-annual CRISIS CARE KIT drive begins August 1st.

PROPERTY SALES AND OUR BUILDING FUND

Our very last church-owned property is in escrow. Amazing! The Lord has helped us liquidate these properties during a very difficult period. Terrika Murray-Brown has done an outstanding job of working through each transaction, almost all of them fraught with some challenge due to the age and condition of the houses. This last property is no exception. Please pray for wisdom as we work with the buyers.

I also need to explain how the sale of each property impacts the overall financial picture. The total needed to complete our current obligation is based, in part, on an estimate of net dollars expected from property sales. If properties net less than expected it increases the total; if they net more than expected it decreases the total. With property prices still declining in Marion County we've had to adjust our expectations downward. Having said that, we are still likely to realize around 95% of what we projected several years ago. When you consider the market forces at work since the fall of 2008 that is a miracle!

THIS SUNDAY: PASTOR RICH & I CONTINUE SERIES ON LOVE

Bernie & Rhonda Slingerland are a great example of how love for God can drive decisions that change our lives. In their case it meant leaving careers for the mission field. Pastor Rich will pick up the theme and bring it closer to home. The same love for God that drives our work in the Caribbean and Central America needs to drive our work for God here at home. Please be in prayer for him this week as he prepares to share in the first hour. I will be speaking in the second hour with concluding thoughts on 1 Cor. 13.

Blessings to you all as we continue together on our journey with Jesus. Take to heart these words from Eph. 6:18:

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

I so enjoyed our time together this past Sunday - the Lord gave us a great day. I appreciate your continued prayers for the many in our church family with pressing needs and concerns. Here's some things coming quickly down the pike:

THIS SUNDAY: BERNIE AND RHONDA SLINGERLAND

As we continue this Sunday in our series on love we'll hear from a couple that serve God's heart in an area that now includes our partner country of Honduras.

Bernie and Rhonda have been Nazarene missionaries since 1995. Their region is now known as Mesoamerica, where they oversee 30 countries in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. They facilitate church planting and development for these countries utilizing the Jesus Film, the EvangeCube, personal evangelism, leadership development, the Holiness Cube, and church planting. Bernie is also the regional representative for project “Refocus” - strategy of New Church Specialties. In the past five years they've raised up 82 Jesus Film Teams, participated in the organization of 7 new districts and facilitated the planting of 5,148 missions.

You will be encouraged. They are a great example of God's heart, focus, and passion for the lost.

THIS SATURDAY, NOON to 4: MAIN PARKING LOT: OUR 9TH ANNUAL CRUISE-IN

Yes, it's here - it's hot - it's the greatest car show this side of the Neutral Zone. No doubt about it - you've got to bring your car, your wife, your pink slip and your checkbook...no, wait - wrong commercial. NO KIDDING! Here's an opportunity to put your favorite set of wheels on display for only $5!! And...get a free hamburger from the hamburger king himself, most recently on local cable with his Sunday morning cappuccino of the week - yes, the one and only Pastor RICH STRUCKMEYER! Also selling goodies with our high school kids will be Pastor GREG HALL - all in hopes of raising enough money to re-stock the paintball arsenal. And, that's not all! Rock 'em, sock 'em HITS from your favorite decade - as long as it was the 50's or the 60's. BUT WAIT - what we DO have is the best car show ANNOUNCER north of East St, south of Market, east of 14th, and west of 16th...Pastor TREVOR ROBINSON! Well, I can already hear ignition keys crankin' up the family station wagon. SATURDAY - BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!!

OK - I guess I'm out of time. I've got a board meeting to attend - lucky for you! blessings...

Pastor Jerry

P.S. Exciting news from Marci in Brazil

"Today our tax-exempt status has been approved after 4 times of denial. Thanks for your prayers!!!!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, this is not it. We still need to continue the paperwork process. We need the approval of the government to become a social outreach (for the lack of a better term). Without this we could not ask for grants, etc. So this is another very import process."

Keep the prayers coming and thank you to all.
