    Another good Wednesday to you all!

    One of my favorite thoughts regarding Sunday mornings comes from Psalm 122:1: "I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”  There's nothing quite like the moment each week when God's family comes together for corporate worship.  I hope you always come to this moment with a spirit of anticipation and expectation.  God inhabits the praises of his people.  What a wonderfully marvelous and mysterious thing that is!


    FIRST REPORTS FROM OUR HONDURAS MEDICAL TEAM:

    Over the past two days we received the following reports from Alex Zukowski:

    Today was our first day of work at a church in a city called El Progreso.  Dr. Hall saw 116 people and we passed out a whole bunch of medicine.  Tomorrow we're going to another church in another city, Wednesday Thursday Friday will be up and villages in the mountains (pray for cool weather) we're having a blast, you can just flick the tarantulas right off of the suitcases. On Friday we'll be at the place where the high school team will be in June.  God is good! The team


    Pastor Jerry, Wish you were here!  We had "baleadas" for dinner. It's like a huge soft taco.  Dr. Hall is amazing - sharp all the way through the day which is hard to do in the heat.  The local church folks have little money but huge faith.  We've been seeing over 100 people per day.  Wednesday, Thursday & Friday we'll be traveling to more remote churches.  Jerri McGarrah has been sharing wonderful devotionals about the "peace of God" as spiritual warfare.  We are agents of God's peace and favor.  This is a messed up world but God’s grace abounds all the more!  Tomorrow, with our bare hands, we'll kill 5 chickens for dinner, just kidding it's only 4 chickens!  It's pretty safe to say that everyone considers being here an honor.  Til next time!

    What great reports!  These are your prayers and your contributions at work.  This is the healing ministry of Jesus in the 21st century being extended to "the least of these."  Please allow me to say again, as I did several weeks ago:

    THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO GIVE TO OUR MISSIONS PARTNERSHIP!  AND TO THOSE WHO DON'T: YOU CAN START GIVING TODAY!  Call the office or fill out a pledge card - it is never too late to get started.  There is no way we can touch our world with the compassion of our Lord without your help.  There is no investment you can make that will ever yield more in returns than to make it possible for people to KNOW Jesus - to know his saving grace and his loving touch.  May God continue to bless our team in the days ahead.


    NEXT SUNDAY: ANOTHER WEEK WITH DR. REEDER AND JANET:

    What a great morning we enjoyed with the two of them.  We even had a guest vocalist: Louis Armstrong.  They will be with us again this coming Sunday to talk about process and transition, helping us get our hearts and our heads into the proper frame of mind.  Please remember to fill out the pastoral qualities survey that was made available to everyone on Sunday.  Fill it out and bring it with you this coming week.  Anyone age 15 or older - no membership required - who loves Salem First and cares about her future is welcome to fill one out.

    Last night I resigned as the pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene. I wanted you to hear this from me so you know my heart first hand.

    To The Salem First Church Board,

    Eleven years ago last October we were given the call to come and be your pastor here in Salem. Once we felt God’s definite direction we packed our bags and announced, “We’re going to Salem.” Today, I submit to you my resignation as Senior Pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene. Just as I have always “known” concerning major moves in my ministry, I know that it is time for me to ask for your understanding and blessing as I leave this church that I have so dearly loved. This has come as a result of much prayer and evaluation.

    Together we have journeyed and grown. I am not the same person that arrived here in 2000, and neither are you. Today my journey has come to a fork in the road and I must follow God’s calling to give myself to leading the congregation at Deer Flat Free Methodist Church. It is my request and prayer that you will release me and then commission me to follow God’s directives for my future.

    I will forever be indebted to the Salem First family. It’s been a true adventure together, and one thatI will always cherish. While being your pastor, you have loved us unconditionally, prayed for us, and stood by us through the good times and those that weren’t all that good. As board members, you have served the church faithfully and walked beside me as my friends and advisors. Throughout my life, I will say with pride, “I was the Pastor of Salem First Church of the Nazarene.”

    As you know, across the years this church has had some outstanding leaders. As you search for the next Lead Pastor, you will be constantly in my prayers. The God who brought you some of the best pastors, is the same God who will bring you the next spiritual leader for this congregation. As that happens, together we will rejoice.

    Some Background For Making This Decision

    Before heading into my Sabbatical back in the summer I had been in a wrestling match over what God has wanted me to do, considering whether I’ve brought the church as far as I feel I can. As I sought God and prayed over this, and as we measured our ministry here and looked at the future, we felt that God was prompting our hearts. I have looked to go nowhere, in fact, I have made numerous attempts to push this away and to distance myself from this call, but God has continually brought it back and kept it in front of us. This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life. In the past few weeks there has been a transformation happening in my heart as I have sensed God releasing me from my responsibilities here at Salem. Just over a week ago, God made extremely clear His direction for our lives. It was a defining moment for me. While I w as grateful for the answers to prayer, I have died a thousand deaths over this moment because I hate “good bye’s.” However, Jer and I have come to believe strongly that Salem First deserves a leader who can help the church achieve its true potential.

    Why This is a Difficult Decision

    1) I love this church. For eleven years I have pastored you, loved you and cared about you. I have had the privilege of baptizing many of you, doing numerous weddings, dedicating your children, welcoming many of you into membership, and walked with you through times of loss. We’ve grown together, prayed together, laughed and cried together, and taken steps toward maturity together. My life will never be the same because of our relationship.

    2) I love this community. During these years I have had numerous open doo rs of opportunity to get acquainted with people, businessmen, professionals and many of the people who live here. I’ve served on boards, spent time at the hospital, been involved in community functions, and met fellow pastors. It’s a wonderful community. I have made many friends, and I hate to leave them.

    3) I love our team. This has been a unique and special group that God brought together to serve Salem First. I have found lots of fulfillment serving alongside each of them.

    What I Want To Say To You

    1) Let’s make our last weeks together special. Let’s thank God for our journey together and be together as often as possible.

    2) I am committed to the future of this church. Jer and I have given our all while we’ve been here. You will remain in our prayers.

    3) Show your loyalty to the church. This has been a great church for 100 years. God will provide you with a leader. Now is the time for you to support the church with your attendance, ministry and finances. We have a great Staff that stands ready to continue leading the church during this transition. They will shepherd you well. Salem First is ready for a compelling future. Determine to stay faithful.

    4) Make this a time to grow closer to God and one another. Great churches during a time of transition unite. Give visible love and support to the Church Board as they search for a new pastor to lead this church. God has given us a wonderful District Superintendent in Dr. Stan Reeder. He will be very committed to help find an excellent leader for Salem First. He will be working closely with the Board. So, encourage one another during these days.

    5) Release me to obey God’s direction for my life, with your blessing and support. Your love, encouragement, and pr ayers have always been a wonderful gift to us. We need them just as much now as we always have. Give your love and loyalty to the next Pastor like you have given me. He will have my total support, too.

    In Acts 13, the church at Antioch placed their hands on Paul and Barnabas and released them to minister to others. Everywhere they touched lives, they were an extension of the local church. That’s my desire…to be released and sent out by you and the Holy Spirit, to touch lives, and together rejoice about the good things God will do.

    A Few words from Pastor Dave...

    My Dear Church Family,

    It's Christmas time and I'm sitting here reminiscing about the amazing ways that God has been so good to us. As we've spent this month considering what our world would have been like if Jesus had never come, it's staggering when you stop to think about the radical difference that He's made because of His willingness to step off of the Throne of Heaven and slip so quietly into our world. If Jesus of Nazareth was just a mere man, then His birth would provide no more than intellectual conversation for theologians, slight interest for historians, or unbalanced fascination for any followers. And, if Jesus was only another New Age incarnation of the Christ Consciousness, and not the "fulness of the Godhead bodily", then He did, in fact, deserve to die on that cross for the sin of blasphemy. And, if Jesus is only one of many of gods, and not the Only "Way, the Truth, and the Life", then He would not be the Omnipotent God. And, if Jesus is not Almighty God, then the ancient prophecies predicted a lie.

    But, if Jesus is the "I Am" that appeared to Moses on the backside of the desert, then His Advent as a real, human baby, was necessary:

    To fulfil prophecy, "Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His Name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14);

    To provide an atoning sacrifice for the sins of mankind, "But with the Precious Blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot" (1Peter 1:19);

    To provide a mediator between God and man, "For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (1Timothy 2:5);

    To provide us an example of how we can and ought to live, "...Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an Example, that we should follow in His steps" (1Peter 2:21).

     

    But, if the true benefit of the Christmas Story is the coming of Jesus in human flesh to "redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for Himself a peculiar people," then we need to be reminded that the Little Baby in a Bethlehem manger was named Jesus, by His Father, because "He shall save His people from their sins." So great is His Salvation, that He not only would redeem us from the "wrath to come," but the Spirit of Christ, Who is the True Spirit of Christmas, would secure for Himself a wonderful change of heart in us that would cause loving obedience in His people. Because He did come, we don't have to imagine what our world would be like if He hadn't come.

    Don't forget, we have 2 great services planned for this weekend: Saturday at 6 pm and Sunday morning at 11 am.

    Thanks for your great love and amazing faithfulness. Your prayers for Jer and I, as well as the rest of the staff are so deeply appreciated. I'll look forward to seeing you this weekend!

    A CALL TO PRAYER

    I'm issuing a Call To Prayer this Sunday evening at 6 pm, for the people of Salem 1st. We will meet in the High School Room of the new building.  I'm asking each of you to sacrifice an hour this evening as we head into perhaps the busiest time of the year for each of us.  It's been a while since we were last together and I believe that this is a good and needed time for us to have some face time with the Father.  Please give this priority.  I believe it will be DIFFERENCE MAKING. The needs are great and your prayers will bring about the IMPOSSIBLE.

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear First Family,

    I am thanking God for you today and praying that each of you will have a wonderful time tomorrow with friends, family, neighbors, or even the family pet.  You guys have been such a blessing to us and we hold you in our hearts.  Here's a few things worth your consideration.

    1. THANKSGIVING OFFERING - As you know, we have a big goal of $390,000 we are targeting so that we can complete the remaining pieces of our New Building.  This will enable us to use the Gym, Kitchen, finish the touches in the Lobby, and do a bit of a facelift in the Children's area.  Thank you for your prayerful consideration and your sacrificial gift or pledge. You'd be amazed how much you can give systematically over a bit of time.  If you haven't participated in this project yet, this is the perfect time to get on board. Why not consider a pledge?  If you'll be away this Sunday, you can always respond the first Sunday of December.

    2. COMMUNION - We will be sharing in the Lord's Supper this Sunday during our worship services.  It's always special when we have a chance to break bread together and remember the price that was paid for our salvation by none other than Jesus.  So, prepare your hearts and let's remember together!

    3. ON A SIDE NOTE - Most of you are aware that I do a radio program with my radio partner, Charlie Schiffmann, an Orthodox Jew, each Sunday evening on KPDQ 93.9 FM. The program is called: THE TEACHER AND THE PREACHER.  We have had several Teacher and Preacher evenings where we've invited listeners to give us a chance to meet them.  And in both Salem and Portland, these have been special and blessed times.  We are going to be in CORVALLIS Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the Public Library.  Charlie and I have been invited to speak that evening on Israel, and it's open to the public.  Any who might be interested in going, please feel free to join us.  Gary Cummings has offered to drive a group down from the church that evening as well.  If you're interested in catching a ride, please let us know in the office this Sunday.

    As you get around the table tomorrow, I hope you'll remember many of those who are going through their first holiday season having experienced a painful loss.  It has a way of totally changing the experience.  Also a word of prayer for our troops, our leaders and our church families that are under stress these days.  Your prayers make a difference.  Thanks for letting me count on you!  See you Sunday.

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear First Family,

    With November comes great memories and a great Holiday season.  For me, it catches me a bit off guard as I wonder, "Where has the year gone?"  It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating New Years, and now I'm looking at getting tax information together.  One of the great verses of the Bible that seems so fitting is from Paul to the people of Ephesus, "Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." 5:15-16  

    As I shared with you Sunday, these are days of GREAT opportunity for us as a congregation.  We are submerged in a sea of neediness.  It's all around us.  And, we still believe that JESUS is the answer for people's lives and situations.  This is where our ability to capitalize on completing our Building Project will pay big dividends in how we can better serve both our congregation and our neighborhood.  Thanks for your ongoing partnership.  There's no way we could do this without you.  God has been so faithful to help us, and your efforts are being used by Him to make a true difference.

    So, as we go through November, let's give some serious thought and prayer to what we might do for a SACRIFICIAL Thanksgiving offering - either pledge or cash.  I believe that God will do something SIGNIFICANT as we step out in faith.  You guys are the best!  I'll see you Sunday.  Come expecting a great day!

  • A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

    Good Wednesday to you all!  If you like FOG this started out as your kind of day!  In a fascinating story from Acts 14 Paul goes from being thought a God to being stoned and left for dead.  In the midst of the melee, talking to them about how God has let nations go their own way, he says:

    "Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”  Acts 14:17

    What a great reminder.  As King David so often commented - the result of his years in the open fields of Israel - God is never without a witness when you consider the work of His hands, His creation all around us.  From the beauty of our Willamette Valley to a star-studded sky on a crisp, clear night, God is everywhere apparent.


    END OF YEAR NEEDS: THANKSGIVING BASKETS / BENEVOLENCE FUNDS

    This is the time of the year when the gap between those who have and those who don't seems especially striking.  Our cultural traditions tend to celebrate excess this time of year.  Everything from a loaded table at Thanksgiving to a tree loaded with gifts at Christmas.  For many - probably more than we'd think - a turkey on Thanksgiving or multiple gifts under the tree will only be possible with help from others.  You can help make that possible in two ways.

    THANKSGIVING BASKETS:  Over the next several Sundays we will be collecting non-perishable food items - must not be opened or expired - and contributions for the Thanksgiving baskets we deliver to families.  Our goal is to provide as many baskets as possible, beginning with those in our own church family, extending what we have available after that to others in need.

    BENEVOLENCE FUND:  This fund is in desperate need of replenishing.  Periodically we put out a note for help to our SS classes, but some of you may not be aware of this ongoing need.  Gifts should be clearly marked “Benevolence Fund.”  Bertie and I oversee these dollars.  Our goal is to help, in small ways, as many as we can.  We do this by limiting the amount we make available to any one individual or family.  We are not equipped to handle requests for car payments, rent, or mortgages.  We will sometimes provide assistance with bills by offering to help with a payment if the person can raise a certain amount themselves.  We provide vouchers for food.  Our priority is the church family because these are the situations with which we're most familiar.  UGM and the Salvation Army are better equipped to understand and meet the bigger needs of people.  Because we regularly refer people to them we support both organizations with regular gifts.  Thanks for your help!


    SAFETY/SECURITY TEAM DINNER: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 6:30 pm, LONDON ROOM

    If you have an interest in this area, you're invited to an informational dinner on Wednesday, November 16, at 6:30 pm.  Many of you are already on this team and may not even know it.  If you volunteer in our parking lot ministry, or serve as an usher or greeter, you're already on the team!  Our goal is to bring as many of those people together, along with others who may have an interest, for an informational session where the primary goal is simple: AWARENESS.  Our goal is to  do everything we can to ensure that we're ready for the types of emergency/security situations most likely to happen when people come on campus.  If you're going to join us, please let Pastor Rich know - he's doing the meal.  Thanks!

    12/24, Saturday: one Christmas Eve Service at 6 pm (Family Christmas Service led by Pastor Trevor and Pastor Jerry)

    12/25, Sunday, Christmas Day:  one Christmas Day Service at 11 am; Traditional Christmas Service led by Pastor Carol and Pastor Dave; no Sunday School and no CR

    12/26, Monday: Church office closed; Salem Christian Day School closed

    12/28, Wednesday: regular Church office hours; no Wednesday evening program

    A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

    Good Wednesday to you all!  With Pastor Dave and company just freshly in Israel, you can count on two things:  1) THEY'RE TIRED!  2) HE'S NOT WRITING THIS NOTE!  So be sure and pray for them over the next ten days: for their safety, their travel, and they're connection with the Lord as they walk the land of Jesus.

    COMPLETE SURRENDER: THE CALL TO A LIFESTYLE

    "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."  Rom. 12:1-2

    Pastor Dave just finished a series on how we, as Christians, often masquerade.  Week after week he challenged us to take off the mask and surrender ourselves to the work of God's Spirit in our lives.  This coming Sunday Pastor Marci will pick up this theme of surrender.

    The above verse, at least in my mind, is one of the best Biblical pictures of what it means to surrender completely to God.  It is nothing short of "self-death"; the setting aside of everything I hold dear about my life in exchange for God's work, and God's will, in my life.  No escape clauses, no exceptions, no exclusions, no excuses.  It is the means by which God's Spirit is able to both cleanse and empower, at the very deepest levels, our spiritual lives.  It is the heart of what we Nazarenes call entire sanctification.

    Why is it so important?  Because without it we will fail to properly discern the will of God for our lives.  Look at the verse above: "...offer yourselves...be transformed...THEN you will be able to test and approve..."  Think of the masquerade challenges as they would apply to the life of Jesus.

    Did Jesus struggle with sharing his faith?

    Did Jesus struggle with worry?

    Did Jesus struggle with finding happiness?

    Did Jesus struggle with forgiveness?

    Did Jesus struggle with giving to God?

    The answer, obviously, is no, but many Christians disconnect from the reality of HIS life as they consider the reality of their OWN life.

    Jesus didn't struggle because he was completely surrendered to God's Spirit and thus, God's will.  1 Corinthians 2:16 makes it clear that those who are "born again" are given the very mind of Christ.  Our capacity for using to the fullest what God has given us will depend completely on our willingness to surrender completely.  Give Romans 12:1-2 some time in your prayer and meditation this week.  It can, should, and will change your spiritual life.

    Remember to pray for Pastors Joshua and Marci as they prepare to share this coming Sunday.

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear First Family,

    I was awake much in the night.  Listened to it rain, got up and checked on the rain, had a visit with Jesus, and then went back to bed for a bit.  But, I was reminded again that we serve an incredible God, One who does work the night shift.  We're going to be talking about Him as we come together this Sunday.  We've got a great morning in store, so I hope you'll come expecting a great connection with The Master.

    As you know, we're headed into our 3rd Sunday of October already.  Time seems to be in the fast lane.  I find my days full and catch myself wondering if I'm caught up in the busy-ness of our times and just giving Jesus the "leftovers" of my day.  This is where my own sense of Masquerading comes in.  I hope that you've been committed to close the gap between what we profess about our belief and walk with God, and what we actually live.

    I'd like to ask you to join me in several areas...

    1) Take some time to really pray for our church family.  We've got some serious illnesses, unemployed people who are weary of looking, homes that are under attack, daily financial pressures, and much more.  However, we've also got a Father who invites us to call on Him.  Would you join me in really giving some intercession time for our flock?  I know it will make a difference.

    2) Take some time to prepare yourself as you head to the church this Sunday.  Your prayers for the services, our teachers, staff and volunteers, as well as the preacher, really enables God to move and accomplish His will in our midst in a more meaningful way.  You'd be amazed the difference it will make if you come prepared to encounter God.

    3) Why not reach out and include someone?  There is a world of people who could benefit greatly from an encouraging atmosphere and a word of hope that will be extended.  Who knows how God will use your caring invitation in the life of someone who needs to hear some good news?

    Please know that you are in my prayers this day.  I look forward to seeing you this weekend.  THANKS FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE FAITHFULNESS, LOVE AND SUPPORT!  You guys are the best!

    A few words from Pastor Jerry...

    Good Wednesday to you all!  Pastor Dave and I are attending the annual retreat for the district pastoral family.  One of our General Superintendents, Dr. David Graves, is the speaker.  He's done a great job bringing encouragement from God's Word to us all.  Please remember to pray for our district pastor, Dr. Stan Reeder, as well as other pastors you may know.  Pastoral families often arrive at these retreats with heavy burdens.  Everything from personal family situations to difficult church situations are on their hearts and mind. It's just a few days together but God, in His infinite presence and power, can bring encouragement by His Spirit to help sustain them, just as He so often does for you.

    DISCOVER SALEM FIRST CHURCH: INFORMATION AND MEMBERSHIP CLASS

    Sunday, October 16 at 4PM on the new gym stage platform.  Pastor Dave and I will hosting our next information and membership class, DISCOVER SALEM FIRST!  So let me take the guess work (as Pastor Dave loves to say) out of WHAT this is about and WHO is this for.

    WHO is this for?  This informational class is for anyone interested in knowing more about Salem First Church.  You may have attended 2 weeks; you may have attended 22 years.  But you share this in common: you've never really had a complete overview of the church with an opportunity to ask questions along the way!  This class is informational.  It does not obligate you in any way whatsoever.  It does serve as a membership class for those who may be interested.

    WHAT is this about?  It's an informational session that covers everything from what we believe about God to how the church is organized to who's on the church staff.  We will talk about our core values and our history as a church.  We're almost 100 years old so we have a lot to talk about!  The session will last about two hours.  You'll be in by 4 and out by 6.

    Young or old, new or not so new, Pastor Dave & I invite you to attend.  We look forward to seeing you there!

    A few words from Pastor Jerry...

    Happy almost October day!!  As I considered the change of seasons I thought of these words from the book of Job:

    "Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?"  (Job 38:31-33)

    Who can comprehend our God and, yet, "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" (Rom. 5:8)  To understand such love, the gift from Him who is Creator of the Universe!  Impossible to fully grasp, and yet He loves us "with an everlasting love!" (Jer. 31:3)

    MASQUERADE: A CHALLENGING WORD

    Pastor's message this past Sunday was challenging.  Whose responsibility is it to reach our world with the Gospel of the one who died for us?  The answer is obvious: each of us is commanded by God to move within our OIKOS (our world) and share what God has done for us.  If God so loved the world... shouldn't we?

    I was struck by the timeliness of his words given a survey released in September by Barna Research.  It was an in-depth study of people in the United States that claim to have a relationship with God through Christ.  In the summary piece Barna writes the following:

    [When it comes to commitment]... "four out of five self-identified Christian adults (81%) say they have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today. More than three out of four self-identified Christians (78%) strongly agreed that spirituality is very important to them. Yet, less than one out of every five self-identified Christians (18%) claims to be totally committed to investing in their own spiritual development. About the same proportion of self-identified Christians (22%) claims to be “completely dependent upon God.” Those figures help explain why a majority of self-identified Christian adults (52%) believe that there is much more to the Christian life than what they have experienced. Without a full determination to live like Christ and for Him, the path to complete transformation is blocked.

    [When it comes to repentance] ..."most of the self-identified Christians in the U.S. (64%) state that they have confessed their sins to God and asked for His forgiveness. But the evidence is quite clear that relatively few self-identified Christians are serious [about transformation]... In fact, only about 3% of all self-identified Christians in America have come to the final stops on the transformational journey – the places where they have surrendered control of their life to God, submitted to His will for their life, and devoted themselves to loving and serving God and other people."

    This last fact is stunning for what it reveals about Christians and the "church" they present to the world.  Absent a love for serving God and people (especially those without Christ) is it any wonder so many on the outside see Christianity and the church as irrelevant?  This is why when Jesus was asked about the one most important commandment he stunned those listening by saying the entire law and the prophets can be summed up in two sentences!  “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Mt. 22:37-40)

    It's this "love your neighbor" evangelism piece that's largely missing from the lifestyle of many Christians.  And that's what real evangelism is - a lifestyle, not a program - just as Pastor said.  Our part is to make sure the lifestyle message is intelligible, credible, relational, personal, and sacrificial.  The living Gospel, when it flows from a heart that loves both God and the people for whom he died, has always been a message worth listening to!

    Dear Salem First Family,

    If you’ve got a minute, I just wanted to pass on a couple of things that I think are worth sharing.  So, let’s go…

  • Many of you took the time to respond to the “What’s Love Got To Do With It” card.  It was a delight to find that stack of cards waiting for me on my desk as I returned to the office.  I was so delighted as I read through the vast number of names, knowing that you committed yourself to reach into our City and hold out the Gospel to those who don’t know Jesus.  THANK YOU!  I love being able to count on you.
  • Our Caesarea Philippi, AKA Salem.  As I shared with you on Sunday, we have a fantastic opportunity to join Jesus where He’s at work here in our City, and specifically with our N.E. Neighbors.  I’m convinced that this Fall can be a great season for Salem 1st.  As we target being a 1) Place of Learning, 2) a Place of Belonging, and 3) a Place of Serving, we get to provide significant opportunities that Divinely meet the needs of the people living all around us.  So, we’re in for a great adventure.  Thanks for being faithful and committed.  It’s the only way we can push back the Darkness effectively.
  • New Series – MASQUERADE.  Beginning this Sunday we’ll be taking an honest look at whether we actually live out our profession, or whether we masquerade ourselves, pretending to be one thing externally, but another thing in our walk with Christ.  I think you’re going to find the Sundays of this series to be both challenging and encouraging.  I hope you’ll feel good about inviting someone to join you.

  • A few words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear Salem First Family,

    Have you ever heard of that old saying, “There’s no place like home”?  Well, we’re back and we’re glad to be back.  I can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to seeing you this Sunday.  We’ve got a very special day planned for you.  We’ll be remembering 9/11 in the first part of the service as we turn our focus on God and His faithfulness.

    I’ll be presenting what I believe to be a very timely message for Vision Sunday.  It’s a look at our future, and a reminder of why we do what we do.  I think it’s going to be a fantastic Lord’s Day, and I can’t wait to be with you.  Jer and I remembered you often while we were away.  We are certainly indebted to a valued and capable staff, as well as your faithfulness.

    September is a great time to move into an exciting Fall season at Salem 1st.  God’s got great days ahead for us.  So, let me encourage you to remember what a difference you make as you pray, participate, and plan for a new adventure as we follow the Master.

    Come this Sunday expecting great things.  He’s known for doing Great Things!  I count on your prayers.  It’s the best thing you do for me.  See you Sunday!

    Good Wednesday, August 31, to you all!  Only 115 shopping days 'til Christmas!  Major holiday season has officially arrived.  All the biggies - LABOR DAY, THE MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY, THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS!  Wow - my stock pick of the week: Hallmark Cards.  OK - there you have it.  It's why you wait each Wednesday with bated breath for this e-mail.  And...it's why you'll be SO HAPPY to have Pastor Dave back in the saddle next week!!  Yes - hard to believe but true.  Pastor Dave returns to the office on September 6 - to a more safe and sane e-newsletter article on September 7 - and to the pulpit September 11.  We'll ALL be glad to have the McGarrahs back.  September 11 is VISION SUNDAY.  Pastor Dave will be setting the tone for the fall, asking the question: why do we do the things we do?  Following that, we'll move into a new series entitled: CHRISTIAN ATHEIST.  Thank you, again, for your prayers and your help during the time of their sabbatical.

    SUNDAY, 9/4: FIRST SERVICE: TRANSFORMED INTO HIS IMAGE

    "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Cor. 3:18

    If you're anxious to get a head start on my message this coming Sunday, begin to read and contemplate 2 Cor. 3:7-18.  It will be the focus as I wrap up some thoughts I began to share with you last week, and wrap up our summer theme on LOVE.  I encourage all of you to ask God for a special anointing of His Spirit as we gather in His presence.  Ask him to receive our praise in music, song, and scripture, while we open our hearts to whatever His Spirit may have to reveal.  Each Sunday is an opportunity for His family to share a synergy in the Holy Spirit uniquely designed by God to encourage and build His Church.  Thanks to those of you that have said to me: I pray for you each week.  I am never more in need than in those weeks I'm preparing to bring His Word.

    SUNDAY, 9/4: SECOND SERVICE: LIFE IS LIKE...

    Pastor Joshua will be sharing from the Word as we wrap the series up this week.  In looking at the parables of Christ we are once again reminded that PEOPLE - especially those in need, and those estranged from God - are the focus of his heart.  As you consider your own call from God to make a difference, ask for a heart to INVEST AND INVITE.  It is in relationships with those outside the Kingdom that we find opportunity to share our own story.  It is often in the telling of our own encounters with God that others begin to open up to what God may also be doing in their lives.  The recent baptisms are reminders of how powerful these personal stories can be.

    SEPTEMBER 4: FLOWERED SHIRT SUNDAY

    Don't forget!  This week we celebrate God's infinite creativity in nature as we drag the best and brightest out of our closets.  Hilo Hattie and Tommy Bahama ought to be paying Him royalties!

    Well, well, well.  As hard as I tried, I completely fumbled a key fact in talking about the staff last week.  Well, let it never be said that I was too proud to correct a mistake - even if it was honest, and even if I had to put up with all kinds of grief because of it - no, I'm a bigger man than that.  Pastor Greg did NOT attend George Fox U.  He graduated from Faith Evangelical Seminary in Tacoma, Washington.

    READ THE RED AND PRAY FOR POWER!  Heard that a long time ago - not bad advice when the red you read are the words of Jesus in the Gospels.  I hope you find encouragement in Him this week.

    SUMMER OF LOVE AND A FIRST-CLASS STAFF

    "Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." 1 Tim. 4:11-16

    Teaching and leading God's people in worship is serious business.  As we approach the last two Sundays of Pastor Dave's sabbatical I want to express my thanks to those who've filled in so capably, and take this opportunity to share some things about them.  Quite often, when a pastor steps away for sabbatical, he will look for capable teachers/preachers from outside the church to take his place on Sunday.  This can be true even if he has capable staff in key ministry roles.  In our case, not only did he turn the helm over to me, but he left it to me to arrange for staff to take his place.  That kind of confidence speaks volumes for him as well as for our staff at Salem First.  My thanks to Pastor Rich, Pastor Phil, Pastor Joshua, Pastor Greg, and Pastor Trevor for taking on one or more Sundays during this time.  I have had - we have had - very positive feedback from the church family.  The most common expression has been gratitude for the great messages while also expressing thanks because people felt they better got to know some of the other pastors.  It is in response to this that I decided to share a bit about those that have taken lead roles over the past two months.

    The Church of the Nazarene requires that everyone seeking to be ordained to vocational ministry must have what they believe is a personal call by God on their life.  As such they may seek to be ordained as Elder or Deacon.  The difference between Elder and Deacon is essentially this: the Elder has a gift and call to preach whereas the Deacon has a gift and call to vocationally minister outside the call to preach.  There are qualifying steps to take, as well as educational requirements one must meet.  While meeting these requirements a person will usually hold a district Minister's License, one that allows him/her to pastor but requires annual renewal by the district assembly until approved for ordination.

    On our staff we currently have seven ordained Elders, one ordained Deacon, and one Licensed Minister.  Pastors Dave, Joshua, Trevor, Rich, Phil, Marci and I are Elders.  (Pastor Rich was ordained by the Christian Churches, Independent.)  Pastor Carol is a Deacon; Pastor Greg is a Licensed Minister moving toward ordination.  (We also have a significant number of retired Elders from several denominations, including two retired Nazarene District Superintendents, Dr. Carl Clendenen and Dr. Jerry Manker.)

    Pastors Dave, Rich, Phil, Marci, and I have all served as senior pastors.  Interestingly enough, all of us also had prior assignments as staff pastors before serving at Salem First.  Pastors Joshua and Trevor - both graduates of Nazarene Universities (SNU & NNU, respectively) believe God is calling/preparing them to eventually co-pastor a church plant.  Pastor Greg, a recent graduate of George Fox Seminary, was formerly the owner of Legacy Real Estate but felt God's call on his life.  Having sold his business he's now a budding teacher / theologian, and Salem First is his first full-time pastoral assignment.

    It is an eclectic gathering of people, personalities, and gifts.  But all of them share the same call and desire to serve God's Kingdom.  Please continue to pray for them.  Encourage them, as well, with an occasional word or note.  Those small things can mean more than you know.

    CRISIS CARE KITS: LOVE IN ACTION

    Approaching, as we are, the last Sunday in August we're rapidly running out of time to package and prepare our latest shipment of Crisis Care Kits.  As of last Sunday we had donations for about 90 - running a good deal behind the 200 we usually send.  It's not too late to jump on board.  A $20 bill in Bill King's hand, or my hand, or anybody's hand you trust - is still the EASIEST way to get a baggie filled with all the emergency items.  Thanks for caring.

    BETH MOORE: BE ENCOURAGED, BE EQUIPPED

    The simulcast is two weeks from Saturday.  Beth Moore has been an encouragement to countless thousands in her equipping / discipleship ministry.  It's not too late to pick up a ticket for yourself or as a gift to someone who might not otherwise go.  You can call the church office or see someone at the Welcome Center on Sunday.

    LOVE AND OUR MISSION

    Pastors Joshua, Phil, Rich, and I have spent the last five weeks giving thought and voice to God's heart and God's love.  Jesus sums it up with his response to a Sadducee when queried on the most important command of God.  He said:

    “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:57

    He keeps it simple for us. A true love of God will always mean a true love for others.  When you combine this with Jesus' mission to "seek and to save those that are lost" the picture is clear.  The measure of success for God's Church - those truly saved by His grace  - will always be their love for each other and their concern for the lost.

    CAMP SEASON, GOD'S LOVE & VOLUNTEERS

    Pastor Carol is in the middle of JAM camp.  40 kids converged on our campus to explore and celebrate the creative gifts they've been given by God.  Music, art, photography - all taught, modeled, and encouraged by 20 volunteers from our church family.  Over the past 3 weeks we've sponsored 3 camps - High School, Mid-Hi, and JAM.  A total of 140 children and teens attended these camps - an awesome number!  But even more gratifying is the 70 volunteers that lovingly served them.  Without volunteers these camps are not possible. This, too, is an expression of God's love.

    Evangelism studies continue to show that children and teens are the demographic MOST likely to place their faith in Jesus.  Once in your twenties the percentages drop dramatically and continue to do so throughout life.  Of concern to me is the fact that as our church is aging on one end (our two largest demographics are our two oldest demographics) we are not replacing young families on the other.  We are, so to speak, aging in place.  Many of our newer teens and children are coming without family attached.  Because of this there are fewer parents to join us as volunteers when we have camps, retreats, or trips.  It becomes critical for the church family to come alongside these kids as volunteers, group leaders, and mentors..

    My thanks to ALL OF YOU who've made yourselves and your resources available to staff and these kids.  You are God's love.

    HOPE STATION OPEN HOUSE

    A reminder!  This Saturday is the annual Open House at Hope Station.  2960 Pringle Rd SE from 10:30-2:30.  Play structures for kids, snacks, music, and a free lunch at 11:30a (really - there IS such a thing).  If you've never checked out what Hope Station does for our community, this is a great opportunity to do so!

  • A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

    GOOD WORDS FROM SUNDAY

    We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.  (1 Jn. 2:3-6)

    “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate."  (Lk. 15: 22-24)

    Two great messages - simple yet profound.  From Pastor Phil: I want to know Jesus so I can love like Jesus.  From Pastor Joshua: We need to value what God values - He values lost souls.

    Our summer focus on love has been both thought- and heart-provoking.  To date, four voices have reminded us of one thing: there is nothing greater than the love of God; that which flows from HIM to us, and that which flows through US to those in our world.  There is no such thing as a church that does not love.  For in that moment, known only by God, that a church begins looking inward to itself instead of outward to a lost world, it ceases to be the church of Christ.  The church is you and me.  Whatever the beat of our collective hearts, so is the heartbeat of our church.  May God give us a continued love for Him, a desire to love like him, and a heart for the things He values.

    Up again this week in the first service is Pastor Phil; speaking in the second service will be Pastor Joshua.  My encouragement to the family is to come prepared, each week, with an open heart to what God may say during this summer of love!

    GREETINGS FROM PASTOR DAVE & JERRI

    I communicated with Pastor yesterday - they both send their love and greetings.  YOU HAVE BEEN SO CONSIDERATE OF THEIR TIME AWAY!!  Thank you.  And he...HAS BEEN OBEDIENT TO THE BOARD'S COMMAND TO STAY DISCONNECTED!  I told him I was so proud of him - made me want to give him a big hug!  To which he said, "It will be an expensive hug - I'm 5,000 miles away."  Oh, well - I didn't know - just a thought.  Bottom line: they are doing well, grateful for your continued prayers during this season of rest and renewal.

    Thanks for keeping the staff in your prayers.  I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

  • A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

    August greetings to all of you!!  August - wow - didn't we just start summer? Can Christmas be only five months away?!

    Speaking of seasons, I'm reminded of these words from God's first psalm:  "Blessed is the one... whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers."  There is a prosperity that goes well beyond what a person may own or possess.  It is the prosperity of a life well lived.  A life lived in God's presence, ever mindful of His will and purpose.  This is the prosperity of treasure that, as Jesus described, is not laid up on earth but rather in Heaven.  That is a treasure that lives on into eternity, long after this life on earth is done.  My prayer for our church is for a renewal of God's Heart in our hearts; that what He treasures we treasure.  "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Mt. 6:21)


    MISSIONS PARTNERSHIP: HONDURAS

    We have, as a church, made the decision to establish a partnership with churches in a fairly isolated region of Honduras.  It also means we've made a decision to give more toward the work of missions than we're asked to give by the Church of the Nazarene.  How much more?  Approximately $40,000 in the first year.  It was a decision that started with a staff conversation, moved to the missions council and then to the church board.  There was unanimous agreement to take this significant step of faith.

    One of the driving forces behind the decision was a need to engage younger generations in the life and work of missions.  Demographic studies by the Nazarene Church showed that younger generations have a heart for reaching people with Christ, especially those most under-privileged and under-resourced.  It re-captures the earliest spirit of our church - the "forgotten quarters" spoken of by our founders.  They also found that younger generations connect best on a personal level - with a face, a place, a person, a cause.  AIDS, poverty, hunger, clean water, education, orphans, social justice - these are the causes for which young people are willing to give, go, sacrifice, and even die.

    Honduras will put a face on our missions program.  It's a third world country in Central America with myriad needs.  Over the next five years we'll begin to personally meet these people: pastors and their local church families.  We'll go - some of you in person, some by video - to towns and villages where the church is already trying to address the needs of water, poverty, and education in the name of Jesus.  We will bring Hondurans back to be with us - sharing their heart and bringing us a word of encouragement, just as it was done in the book of Acts.  These will not be nameless, faceless people for whom we pray - they will be brothers and sisters we know, love, and embrace as our own.

    So how will we raise the necessary funds for this year?  In several ways.

    1) You can make a PLEDGE toward our Missions Project.  If you made a pledge for this year, THANK YOU!  Just keep giving each month.

    2) You can give a GIFT to help us fund specific projects in Honduras.  Mark your check or envelope with: HONDURAS.  We're already forming teams for construction, medical, and youth projects.  If you're interested in going with a team please contact the church office at 503.581.3680 for Roger Schmidt or Bill King.  We will be involved in building, compassionate ministries, Jesus Film and youth projects.

    3) You can support the THANKSGIVING and EASTER offerings.  Twice a year we take a special offering to support our GO TEAMS.  These are the teams that will be working in Honduras over the next several years.

    4) You can be a PRAYER PARTNER.  Commit to pray for those on our GO TEAMS, as well as for God to honor the steps of faith we are taking as a church family.

    As Bill King and I met and talked about this yesterday we were overwhelmed by the need and the cost.  As we prayed for each other we begged God to help us; to start by giving us faith that would not get in the way of His desire to do something miraculous.  This is new for us at Salem First but it’s already happening in many of our larger churches.  We are still in a learning mode but we are excited about this step of faith.  JOIN WITH US!  PRAY, GIVE, & GO!


    SUNDAYS IN AUGUST

    I thought you'd appreciate knowing where we're headed during August.  First of all, kudos to Pastor Rich for a job well done this past week!  What a great model he and Danette provide as they reach out to their neighbors.

    In the first service we continue with our theme "What's Love Got To Do With It?"  And, of course, we know by now, EVERYTHING!

    Picking this up over the next two Sundays will be Pastor Phil.  Please be praying for him as he prepares to share his heart.  Pastor Rich is again on deck for the 21st, then I'll return to wrap up our series with two final messages.

    In the second service we begin a new series called "Surprise Party."  Taken from the three stories Jesus told about a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son, Pastor Joshua begins to emphasize the need for us to INVEST AND INVITE those for whom Jesus died.  Pastors Trevor & Greg will also be teaching and expanding on this theme.


    SABBATICAL SKUNKS: UPDATE

    Well, here we are about half-way through Pastor Dave's sabbatical and, perhaps, the most amazing thing that has yet happened is this: THE SKUNKS APPEAR TO BE ON SABBATICAL AS WELL!!  That's great news!  You can begin to pray the skunks are on a longer sabbatical than he is.


    I close with this from Romans 8, especially for those of you facing significant challenges this week:   "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

  • A Few Words from Pastor Jerry...

    Good day to you all!  The MSG paraphrase of Ps. 122:1-2 says: "When they said, "Let's go to the house of God," my heart leaped for joy. And now we're here, O Jerusalem, inside Jerusalem's walls!"

    I'm ever mindful that one of the greatest benefits of living under the New Covenant is that we no longer must GO to God's House - we are God's House!  The Body of Christ - especially His local Church - is the hope of the world.  Wherever you find yourself this week, remember, as 1 Peter 2:9 says: "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." Be God's living "House" wherever you are, wherever you go.

    PRAY FOR HONDURAS AND THE SLINGERLAND FAMILY

    It was great to have Bernie and Rhonda with us this past Sunday.  We are grateful for the report of how God is moving in this region of our world.  Bernie is our go-to guy as we consider how to most effectively partner with the Honduras churches over the next several years.  He's going back to Panama City to begin preparing a possible game plan for our approval.  This is not new to many churches but it is new to us.  Pray for wisdom and resources as we continue down this path.  If you have not made a pledge to our Missions Partnership fund I encourage you to do so.  And remember, our semi-annual CRISIS CARE KIT drive begins August 1st.

    Our very last church-owned property is in escrow.  Amazing!  The Lord has helped us liquidate these properties during a very difficult period.  Terrika Murray-Brown has done an outstanding job of working through each transaction, almost all of them fraught with some challenge due to the age and condition of the houses.  This last property is no exception.  Please pray for wisdom as we work with the buyers.

    I also need to explain how the sale of each property impacts the overall financial picture.  The total needed to complete our current obligation is based, in part, on an estimate of net dollars expected from property sales.  If properties net less than expected it increases the total; if they net more than expected it decreases the total.  With property prices still declining in Marion County we've had to adjust our expectations downward.  Having said that, we are still likely to realize around 95% of what we projected several years ago.  When you consider the market forces at work since the fall of 2008 that is a miracle!

    THIS SUNDAY: PASTOR RICH & I CONTINUE SERIES ON LOVE

    Bernie & Rhonda Slingerland are a great example of how love for God can drive decisions that change our lives.  In their case it meant leaving careers for the mission field.  Pastor Rich will pick up the theme and bring it closer to home.  The same love for God that drives our work in the Caribbean and Central America needs to drive our work for God here at home.  Please be in prayer for him this week as he prepares to share in the first hour.  I will be speaking in the second hour with concluding thoughts on 1 Cor. 13.

    Blessings to you all as we continue together on our journey with Jesus.  Take to heart these words from Eph. 6:18:

    "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

    Well, another glorious Wednesday has broken over our fair capital city!

    I so enjoyed our time together this past Sunday - the Lord gave us a great day.  I appreciate your continued prayers for the many in our church family with pressing needs and concerns.  Here's some things coming quickly down the pike:

    THIS SUNDAY: BERNIE AND RHONDA SLINGERLAND

    As we continue this Sunday in our series on love we'll hear from a couple that serve God's heart in an area that now includes our partner country of Honduras.

    Bernie and Rhonda have been Nazarene missionaries since 1995.  Their region is now known as Mesoamerica, where they oversee 30 countries in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.  They facilitate church planting and development for these countries utilizing the Jesus Film, the EvangeCube, personal evangelism, leadership development, the Holiness Cube, and church planting.  Bernie is also the regional representative for project “Refocus” - strategy of New Church Specialties.  In the past five years they've raised up 82 Jesus Film Teams, participated in the organization of 7 new districts and facilitated the planting of 5,148 missions.

    You will be encouraged.  They are a great example of God's heart, focus, and passion for the lost.

    "Today our tax-exempt status has been approved after 4 times of denial.  Thanks for your prayers!!!!!!!!!!!  Unfortunately, this is not it.  We still need to continue the paperwork process.  We need the approval of the government to become a social outreach (for the lack of a better term).  Without this we could not ask for grants, etc.  So this is another very import process."

    SERIES UPDATE: WHERE WE'RE HEADED THIS SUNDAY


    Good Wednesday to you all!  I felt like we got off to a great start in our series, "What's love got to do with it?"  Last Sunday we considered the words of Jesus in Mt. 22 as he was asked about the most important commandment.

    Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”


    It turns out, whatever this love is that he's talking about, it's critical in the life and movement of the church.  Love is not just A core value, it's THE core value.  Not only does he say that this love, lived out in our lives, completely fulfills the heart of Biblical instruction, but he also says it's critical as an on-going witness to God's work.  In John 13, just hours before he went to the cross, he washed the feet of his disciples and told them the following:

    "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”


    What we come to understand is that this "love" Jesus commands is to be the very proof by which, he says, the world will later judge his ministry and the church.


    If you want to get a head start on this coming Sunday begin to read and consider I Cor. 13.  We will eventually work our way through the chapter but this week I'll focus on the first three verses, along with other Biblical texts that speak to the heart of what it means to experience, and live out, this love of which Jesus is talking.


    I hope this finds you encouraged in whatever you may be facing this week.  Blessings to you all...

    GREAT DAYS AHEAD!


    Well, has anyone complained about the sunny - sometimes even hot - weather yet?  I hope not!  I say let's have faith for an extended fall since, once again, the Oregon legislative sub-committee in charge of the weather cheated us out of spring!  OK - here's a few things coming down the pike.


    TONIGHT: OPENING SESSION WITH DR. JOHN RITTER ON C.S. LEWIS!

    Dr. Ritter (Pastor Keith Ritter's father) will be teaching a series on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm covering the life and works of C.S. Lewis.  Known and revered by many as one of the most effective apologists of the Christian faith, Lewis has captured the imaginations of young and old alike with his myriad books and writing styles.  I encourage you to take advantage of this very special series.


    THIS SUNDAY: NEW SERIES: WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

    This will be our emphasis throughout the summer.  The song, "What's Love Got To Do With It?" was made popular by Tina Turner in the 1980s.  Coming, as it did, on the heels of her difficult marriage and divorce from Ike Turner, made the song all the more poignant.  The question, however, is one we Christians need to ask.  If, in fact, Jesus says our witness to the world depends on his love at work in us, then there's probably no more important question to ask.  I hope you find the coming weeks insightful and challenging.  It's my hope the answers to this question will make a difference in your life and in our church.


    GREETINGS FROM THE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT

    A few hours ago Dr. Stan Reeder stopped by my office just to say hi, get caught up on the church, and share some time in prayer.  He prayed for us; for God to move on our hearts in the months ahead.  He prayed for Pastor Dave and Jerri, that God would refresh them in this time away.  As district pastor he carries a lot of things on his mind and calendar.  I greatly appreciated his visit and encouragement!  I knew you would too.


    PASTOR DAVE & JERRI UPDATE: NO SABBATICAL SKUNKS

    Well, speaking of Pastor Dave...Someone said to me on Sunday, "Aren't you nervous now that Pastor is leaving?"  I replied,  "Yes, but if you think I'm nervous how do you think Pastor feels leaving me in charge?!"  Well, I talked to him on Monday.  He's feeling great and they're doing just fine.  Having him gone has already boosted the level of intensity in our staff prayer time.  Each day we huddle together and pray, "Oh, Lord - please don't let anything bad happen while pastor is gone.  Save it until he gets back."  OK - that always makes us feel better!  It is skunk season at the McGarrah's.  At last report no new skunks had taken up residence.


    Well, that's all the news that's fit to print.  And if you know where that line comes from you've been around a few years.  I'm looking forward to being together as a family this coming Sunday for worship and praise.  Hope it's a good week for you.

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear First Family,

    Just a quick note as we head into this Holiday weekend.  I wanted to just tell you about this Sunday.  We've got a great morning planned.  We'll be celebrating Communion together and I'll be wrapping up the final message in the EXTREME series.  It's one of those days you'll not want to miss.  If you're in town, I'll really look forward to seeing you!

    Secondly, if you've been looking for a Bible study to get into, here's a great one.  Pastor John Ritter (this would be our own Keith Ritter's father) will be kicking off a series on WEDNESDAY NIGHTS entitled "BEYOND NARNIA."  This is going to be a great study on APOLOGETICS - from the life of C.S. Lewis.  I hope you'll take advantage of this special opportunity.  John has been so willing to cover for me while I'm away.  What a treat!

    Speaking of being away, here's a story for you.  When I was just a young kid, maybe 6 or 7, my parents made arrangements to be away to a required meeting known as District Assembly.  This was a gathering once a year for all Pastors on the District in which they served.  This yearly gathering lasted most of a week. At the time, there was my older sister, me and my younger brother.  My folks had lined up, as I remember, a wonderful, elderly lady (probably about 50ish) to stay with us. I hate to tell you this, but both my brother and sister traumatized her.  She literally aged during the week she was with us. I won't go into detail of what activities we got into, but I'll just say that we really stressed her out.  Rumor had it that she was in therapy for the rest of her life.  Wow, did we get into trouble!

    Why do I mention this?  Please don't traumatize the Staff while I'm away.  They are ready, willing and able to care for you, love you and minister to each of you as your needs arise.  I'm so grateful to have the capable team that we have.  They love to serve and you always get to reap the benefits.

    As Jer and I step away, we want each of you to know that we are humbled by the love and generosity of the Church board.  We don't feel deserving of it.  We plan to come back refreshed and better, ready to jump right back into a fantastic Fall season.  We value your prayers more than anything else.  I count on your ongoing faithfulness and will be anxious to see you upon our return.

    I hope each of you has a fantastic 4th.  I'll be looking forward to spending this Lord's day with you!

    INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF SALEM FIRST

    Well, happy Wednesday, May 25th! I asked Pastor for permission to hijack his weekly column to share with you TWO GREAT INVESTMENT ideas.

    First, invest in our CHILDREN June 21-26

    Our annual outreach to children in our neighborhood takes place in June. Day Camp - Pandamania - is much more than just another opportunity to have fun. It takes on eternal significance when you realize that some of these children have never heard of Jesus, much less know anything about his love for them. So how can you help?

    VOLUNTEER - PROVIDE SUPPLIES - PRAY

    Contact Pastor Trevor or Ellen Pearson (you can also see Roseanne Bowles at the Welcome Center on Sunday) to volunteer or provide supplies. When you have over 250 kids on campus - especially now that we've added another 28,000 square feet to run in - you need LOTS OF LOVING EYES. There is a place for you to serve. Additionally, the supply needs for this kind of activity usually exceed the budgets set in place. Every year we're helped by the generous donations and contributions of those in our church family.

    Second, invest through the SALEM NAZARENE FOUNDATION.

    It has been my privilege to work with the Salem Nazarene Foundation for almost five years. Tim’s vision, combined with the dedicated service of board members, has been inspiring. We are fortunate to have a Foundation available to serve the interests of our church family, interests that can have a significant impact on our future. I encourage you to think of the Foundation, not simply as a way to provide for the Kingdom after your death, but also as a resource to help guide you through critical decisions about your estate while still alive!

    How do I invest in the Foundation? You do so by taking a small amount of time to think about what you want done with your earthly resources after your death. The only caveat: this cannot be done once you're with Jesus - you must do it this side of Heaven! The good news is that God, along with some very wise people in the church, can help you make decisions now that can serve your loved ones and the church long after your departure. I'm well aware of the difficulty people sometimes have thinking about, much less talking about, death. And yet, God calls us to be stewards of what He's entrusted to us. If that's so, then you and I must take responsibility for those resources, both now, as well as into the future.

    Please remember: this is not just a necessity for the "wealthy." We all have resources entrusted to us by the Father. All of us, after our death, will leave difficult decisions to others if we don't first make those decisions ourselves. I encourage you to call me or Tim Abrahamson - we'll help you take the next step. It may be one of the most important calls you ever make.

    As I close, this reminder: remember to keep each other in prayer. God tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. This side of Heaven there will always be people in the family living at every point along the spectrum of life. We do need each other.

    If you’ve got a few minutes I’d like to just chat about a few things that I think you’ll be interested in.

    FIRST – Thank you for taking the time to read through the e-newsletter.  This is a simple and easy way to stay in touch with the flock in the middle of the week.  Plus, it gives us a chance to keep you updated on things that you’ll want to know about, which leads me to my…

    SECOND – This Friday Night is going to be a GREAT night for our church family.  EXTEND THE VISION is a new twist on our Student Auction Night.  As you read from Pastor Jerry last week, it’s a chance for all of our people to see what we’ve accomplished with the NEW ROOMS and how beneficial they are already, and, a chance to help people see what is remaining and needing to be wrapped up.  You’re going to get a great meal, a chance to get some attractive items at the SILENT AUCTION, and some personal guided tours by Pastors Trevor, Josh and Greg.  Tickets are still available for just $5 per person.  BBQ’d Chicken dinner is on the menu followed by great dessert.  Don’t hesitate to bring someone with you.  A great evening awaits you, starting at 6 p.m.  I look forward to being with you!

    THIRD – Philip Zimmermann will be with us this Sunday, speaking in both services.  Most of you know and love Philip, so you know it’s going to be a great morning.  He’ll be updating us on the work in Germany, specifically in Mainz.  We will be taking an offering for him, so come ready to bless him.  This would be a great Sunday to invite a friend.

    FOURTHEXTREME DISCIPLESHIP is the next series that we’ll be doing together.  It starts on Sunday, May 22, and goes for 5 weeks.  It’s going to be a great adventure for us.  You’ve heard of “Extreme Sports.”  These have been invented by people who are tired of living bland, risk-free, high-comfort lives. These sports cannot be approached casually.  They require extreme discipline, abandonment, and a sense of urgency.  If you want to escape luke-warm spirituality and undergo extreme discipleship, all that you do must honor Christ.  This is a comprehensive life demand.  So, we’re going to focus on what it means to take following Jesus to a whole new level.  CAUTION: SPIRITUAL GROWTH IS NOT FOR LIGHTWEIGHTS!

    You guys, this is a great season to INVITE someone to church.  You’ll not want to miss what’s just ahead!

    FIFTHPASTOR TREVOR’S ORDINATION.  Yep, our Children’s Pastor has met all of the requirements  of ministry and education, and will be ordained on FRIDAY NIGHT, MAY 20TH, AT OUR MCMINNVILLE CHURCH.  This would be a great chance to show your love and support for he and Krystal.  Congratulations, Trevor!

    Thanks for your generous time, and your faithful partnership.  Be praying for the church during these days.  We’ve had many sick people, folks out of work, serious illnesses happening with others.  Also be praying for our Upcoming District Assembly – May 19-20 as our churches gather from across Oregon – that God would meet with us and pour out His Spirit on us.

  • A Few Words From Pastor Jerry...

    Good day to you all!  I'm stepping in this week for Pastor Dave.  Here's a couple of items I hope you'll take to heart.

    FAMILY MINISTRIES: EXTEND THE VISION AUCTION & DINNER: MAY 13 @ 6PM: NEW GYM

    Our auction and dinner this year takes on a different look and focus.  My primary appeal to you is this:  please come out and support this evening.  The cost for dinner is only $5 per person!  We are hoping for participation by a significant number in our church family.

    Our primary purpose is to renew the vision we began to cast several years ago.  While the new lobby and spaces are something we've all enjoyed, we're not finished yet.  We still lack funding to re-make our old gym into a new children's ministry center.  Our HS room, gym, and kitchen also remain unfinished.  Pastor Dave and I want you to hear from our family pastors, Trevor, Greg, and Joshua.  We want you to walk the building with them and see the future through their eyes.  This is an opportunity to renew the commitment we made to our children, as well as a reminder of the incredible possibilities still before us.

    The silent auction begins at 6:00 pm.  Items on display have been donated to support individual students.  The price you pay for the item will go toward the support of that student.  This helps defray the costs of future mission trips, including one we're planning to Honduras.  The auction will be available throughout the evening.

    Dinner begins around 6:15 pm.  After dinner we will divide into groups led by our family pastors.  You will visit the old gym and hear from Pastor Trevor.  In the HS and Mid-Hi rooms you will hear from Pastors Greg & Joshua.  Dessert will be served upon your return.

    Pastor Dave and I will bring the evening to a close by 8:00 pm.  Please come and join us.  Our future effectiveness as a church depends heavily on making full use of the facility God has given us.  Many of you have given sacrificially and, for that, I'm so grateful.  We need everyone - all of us with no exceptions - to get on board.  Our goal is to get this project finished!  We believe May 13 will move us much closer to that goal.


    VIDEO BAPTISM TESTIMONIES

    WOW!  What a great day - what great stories we enjoyed this past Sunday.  Thanks to Nicole Hill, Bill Mays, and Yvonne Petty for their willingness to lead the charge into a new format for baptisms.  The feedback was immediate and positive.  Thanks, again, to Pastor Trevor for all he did to make this possible.

    Baptism for Bill was a poignant moment.  In an email sent on 4/25 to Pastor Dave he wrote, "Pastor Dave, my mother, Thelma, went home to our Lord today @ 11am.  I rejoice in the knowledge that she is now with Him, that she knows I am saved and now know the promise of our Lord and His Kingdom.  She also knew that I would be baptized this coming Sunday."

    Baptism is the privilege of every believer.  More than that, it's a command from Jesus to everyone who believes in Him.  We want to hear your story.  We need to hear how God moved in your life.  There is nothing more encouraging to the community of faith than to hear how people’s lives are being impacted by God's Spirit.  Changed lives change lives!

    Call the church office to begin the process.  You'll be contacted by staff and briefed on what to do.  Our hope is to share these stories, and celebrate someone's baptism at least once a month.  The videos will always be shared in both services.  The baptism, itself, will take place during whichever worship service the person normally attends.

    SECURITY ISSUES AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES

    Over the past two weeks we've had personal items stolen from the coatrack near the choir room.  Please remember, our worship services and classes are open to the public.  These racks are subject to theft.  Our advice is to keep your personal belongings with you at all times.

    What a great Easter! WOW. Here’s what made it great for me…

    This Sunday – Baptism.  I can tell you the testimonies will be powerful.  It’s a great chance to celebrate with those going public with their faith.  We’ve got a great morning planned!

    MAY 8TH - Mother’s Day.  The second Sunday of May is Mother’s Day.  We’ll have a great chance to honor our Moms and to take a look into God’s Book, finding some encouragement and insights that will challenge us to walk straight and strong with God.

    MAY 13TH - STUDENT AUCTION.  This year is going to be completely different than all previous.  What sets this apart as special is the FOCUS.  This particular evening is designed to underscore our FAMILY MINISTRIES.  What this means is that you’ll have a chance to truly see and experience why it’s so vital to our future that we finish and furnish our facilities.  You’ll enjoy a great meal and be able to hear from all three of our Family pastors.  You’ll also get an inside look at the Children’s, Middle School and High School areas as they personally tour you and show you the dream and capability of our future.  As always, there will be a silent auction for our students who will be raising funds to do summer activities.  Tickets are cheap, just $5, and available at both the WELCOME CENTER and OFFICE.  You need to be here, because it’s such a great opportunity for the whole church family to be together.  So, mark the date down now and then reach out and include someone, especially someone who has kids, because it’s going to be a perfect night for them to see… we’re thinking about them.

    MAY 15TH – PHILIP ZIMMERMANN.  Always a favorite.  Philip will be preaching in both morning services.  You’ll not want to miss this one.  You’ll definitely have a great morning with Philip.  Expect to hear an update on the work in Germany.  We will take an offering for him at the close of the service.

    MAY 15TH PM – NIGHT TO HONOR ISRAEL.  This takes place at the Fair Grounds in EUGENE.  Here’s a tangible way to show your support for Israel, along with other Believers.  Information can be found at CUFI.org.

    MAY 22ND – We begin a brand new series that we’ll be in for the next five weeks.

    It’s a great lineup for May/June.  With summer just a month away, I’d like to ask you for several things…

    • Stay Connected - It will keep our the Church stronger through the summer in the same way it is through the rest of the year.
    • Pray - Pray for the Church and for God’s Spirit to be poured out upon it.  Pray for our Staff and Board Members, pray for Honduras, pray for our Building Project as we work to finish it.

  • A few words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear First Family,

    It's Passion Week! I wanted to share a fitting devotional with you that I think is a great story for us as we head toward Easter. Read this and enjoy.

    More than any other time of year, the Passover-Resurrection season stirs faith for renewed life. A prophetic, faith-stirring sign for this season can be seen in what is taking place today in Israel's Carmel Forest.

    Much of the forest was tragically destroyed by a fire at the end of 2010. Just before the fire I visited the forest, enjoying its biblical heritage, lush beauty, and peaceful greenery. However, during that visit I also sensed a strange sadness. I could seemingly hear the groaning of creation due to the sin of humanity. I felt impressed to lay hands on the ground in various locations and bless the land with life in Yeshua's name. Then, just days later, a horrific, cataclysmic fire erupted. Israel's worst natural disaster, the fire devastated not only the Carmel Forest, but took an odious toll in human life.


    Last week I returned to the forest, expecting to see not much beyond charred remains. To be sure, thousands of spindly, blackened tree trunks bear witness to unprecedented devastation. But, to my surprise, I also found hills awash with vibrant beds of red, yellow, pink, purple, blue and lacy white wildflowers. Tall green grasses bow gracefully in the spring breeze. From lush shrubbery across the landscape resound the cheerful melodies of song birds, punctuated by buzzing bees and echos of wildlife. Pitted against the charred, gnarly remains of tree trunks, the Carmel Forest is in revival. God is fashioning beauty from ashes; His handiwork from a baptism of fire. He gives "beauty for ashes...that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that He may be glorified" (Isaiah 61:3).

    After the fire, the State of Israel decided it best for the woods to repopulate naturally. The Carmel Forest is mostly pine, so its aged trees are laden with perhaps millions of pine cones. Many of these cones open and seed only under extremely hot temperatures, such as those generated by fire. So as thousands of trees fell to the flames they created a rich mulch, and together with the cones, seeded new life. Tiny pine saplings are already emerging from the forest floor. Due to the late seasonal rain (biblically, the latter rain) the blackened forest floor is morphing into a verdant lawn. A sweet floral fragrance, warmed by the caressing Mediterranean sun, wafts through the air. Yeshua said, "unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain" (John 12:24).

    Friends, a baptism of fire is coming to the body of Messiah in all nations, including America. Yet God will give beauty for ashes. As with the Carmel Forest, that which is burned may comprise the very "mulch," or nourishing substance. In these last days, those embracing Messiah's baptism by fire will emit and offer up a sweet fragrance like none other. This Resurrection Day, be encouraged, despite the state of world affairs and any difficulties in your personal circumstances. The same power of God that raised Yeshua from the dead is at work to keep you and prepare you for the day of His coming. He loves you with "the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead" (Ephesians 1:19-20a).

    As you know, GOOD FRIDAY service is planned for 7 p.m. on the 22nd. It will be the perfect prescription to help you maximize this Easter weekend. We've got a great Lord's Day planned, a wonderful RESURRECTION CELEBRATION. I hope you'll join me and reach out and invite someone to join you for one of the two services. I've prepared a special message of inspiration and encouragement.     MISSIONS PARTNERSHIP SUNDAY: HOW YOU CAN HELP CHANGE OUR WORLD FOR JESUS

    Good morning!  Did any of you have to wonder if your family had a place to stay warm and secure from the rain last night?  Did you wonder if the water you have to drink will be full of dangerous chemicals and disease-borne bacteria?  Did you worry there might not be enough food in the house to feed everyone today?

    As we approach this coming Sunday, I want you to take a moment and think about something:  How do you want to be remembered by your Christian brothers and sisters in Honduras?  You say, “What do you mean?  I don't know anyone in Honduras.”  No, you don't - at least not yet - but God does.  And God is leading us to do something for "the least of these."  He's asking us to make a difference in a place where Christians lean on Jesus every day to provide the barest of necessities.  And someday, when this life is over, people you may never meet here on earth will be coming to say "thank you."

    Thank you for helping me feed my family.  Thank you for helping to clean up our water supply.  Thank you for medicines and clinics that saved my child's life.  Thank you for schools that helped me learn a trade.  Thank you for sending people to tell us about a God who loves us more than we ever realized; we didn't just hear about Him, we saw Him in the love of those who came, and served, and gave.

    I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this step of faith we are taking to give the nation of Honduras a special place in our hearts as a church.  For almost 100 years Salem First has, as someone once put it, "bled missions."  It's in our DNA to care, and serve, and give.  We are asking for $200,000 in pledges this year.  We're doing it because we believe God is asking us to help people and ministries, from Salem to Honduras, know that Jesus came - not just to die for our sins, but to make this world a better place to live.  I believe our church family is able to do this, and even more.  But it will take an all-out effort that involves everyone.

    What if 200 children and teens pledge $2/week, and 250 others pledge $5/week, and 250 others pledge $10/week toward our Missions Partnership?  It provides over $215,000 to invest in mission projects, both here and abroad!  What we can do alone is limited.  What we can do together is limitless!

    It's a matter of the heart.  Come this Sunday with your heart open to the prompting of God's Spirit.  We are, after all, first and foremost in a partnership with Him to change our world.

    “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’”

    “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’”

    “The King will reply,‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave...

    Dear 1st Family,

    By the time you receive today's e-newsletter, I'll be making my way home from Honduras.  I had three great men from the church that made this trip with me: Bill King, Roger Schmidt, and Jeff Milligan.  This has been a whirlwind trip, but VERY POWERFUL! My heart has been so touched by the people, pastors and churches of Honduras, not to mention the beauty and the poverty.  I'll be anxious to tell you about it this Sunday.  I can't wait to see you, because we've got such a fantastic day planned.  I'll be helping us with our challenge of MISSION PARTNERSHIP.  This is a tremendous opportunity for us as a church, which is one of the big reasons I'm looking forward to being with you.

    I want to thank you for your faithfulness as a part of the life of Salem 1st.  You all add so much.  God has blessed my heart with some fantastic things to share from His Word and His Heart.  So, let's meet together this Sunday morning for an unforgettable Lord's Day.  Come expecting great things.  Between now and then, whisper a prayer for me and the services, and, why not consider who you'd like to invite to come to church with you?  Let's move the Kingdom forward together in Salem.

  • A Few Words from Pastor Dave

    Dear First Family,

    You can’t believe the feedback and stories that I’ve had sent my way since Sunday!  All of it is about God being trustworthy.  My heart has been so pulled toward our Church Family being able to experience a NEW YEAR.  And a key to that is our ability to believe that God can be trusted with every area of our life.  As I shared with you, this is a lesson I’ve had to learn and then relearn and relearn, and… relearn.  But, 100% of the time, God has proved Himself trustworthy.  Here’s an e-mail I received Sunday afternoon.  Read it and enjoy…

    “Hi Dave, I am the woman who came up to shake your hand while you were still up on stage after the 11 am service today.  I said to you that I like how Jesus works through you.  ANYWAY....

    I went from church directly to Skipper's restaurant.  I walked in and there was a line to order.  A "homeless looking" man was in line before me.  He said "you can go first, because I am just going to get a glass of water.”  So I moved in front of him and Jesus told me to buy the man some food.  So when I ordered for us both the total should have come to almost $21.00, but the cashier only charged me $6.79!!!!!!!!!!!  I asked him if it was the "Christian discount" and he said yes.  He said he had watched the man cross the street alone and come in alone and when I ordered him food, that he decided to give the discount.

    Well, that was about a half hour after your talk about the widow woman sharing her last meal with Elijah (if that's his name)!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Just HAD to tell you this about this testimony that God moved sooooo quickly to show me that He is trustworthy!!!!”

    As you know, this is a HUGE weekend at Salem First, with RAY VANDER LAAN.  There’s a few important things that you could do to help me out…

  • Really be praying for Ray.  He’s coming from Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was to have a blizzard today.  Pray that he will be able to travel to Oregon by Friday evening.  Pray for his health.  Pray for traveling mercies.
  • For any who might still be “dragging your feet,” there’s still time to get in on Friday and Saturday.  Tickets will be available at the door.  Some of you might like to sponsor someone who isn’t able to afford a ticket, but who would benefit greatly from the weekend.  If you’d like to help someone else attend, would you just let my assistant, Bertie, know your desire, by calling the office?  God still blesses others through people like you!
  • Come expecting God to do something great!  Your faith and anticipation will make a significant contribution.  Remember the old saying, “You get out of it what you put into it.”
  • Invite someone to come with you on Sunday.  We’ve got a GREAT day in store this Sunday.  Don’t miss out.

  • Let me close be asking you to save February 13th.  It’s our Sunday to celebrate God’s goodness in helping provide our NEW BUILDING, and a chance to say “Thank You” to many of our people and contractors.  There’s only 1 service at 10 a.m., with lunch to follow.  It will be an unforgettable day for us.

  • A Word from Pastor Dave

    Dear First Family,

    I just looked at my calendar and can’t believe that we’ve got Thanksgiving staring us in the face in just a week.  Where’s the time going?  I’ve had my turn signal on for some time, trying to get out of the fast lane and at least get a chance to enjoy the beauty around me.  So, being able to sit down and write out a few thoughts is nice.  Let me brief you on a few items, and then I’ll close with a personal thought.

    FLOOD UPDATE – As you are aware, we had a terrible misfortune happen on November 4, when a water line separated and pumped thousands of gallons of water into both the new building, and the existing building.  The teams of people who showed up and “jumped in” were tremendous.Contractors, church people, Day School workers, custodians, and staff combined to get things under control and cleaned up.  Serve Pro Restoration, along with Efficient Carpet Cleaning, both did an outstanding job of rapidly getting the existing building usable for Sunday.  WAY TO GO!  Since that time the walls have been dried out, floor coverings are going down, work continues to progress and we move forward.  When will we be able to occupy?   Great question.  We hope within the next week or two. Thanks for your incredible patience and fantastic flexibility.  You guys are AMAZING!

    700 CLUB – After last Sunday’s message and challenge, I’ve been tagged as having my own 700 Club.  What does that mean?  Well, if you were here, you remember that I walked us through the financial picture of the new building, along with the remaining needs of remodeling the children’s area in the existing building.  We’ve come 90% of the way with our project.  Our cost for this project has been $5.5 million from the beginning.  It still remains $5.5 million.  All we need to do now is underwrite the remaining 10% - $550,000.  I shared that we could do this quite easily if all of us will get on board.  We need 700 people to give $32 dollars per month for 24 months, and it will be covered.  The BENEFIT is that this enables us to keep the construction project going and we can get it wrapped up, move the children to their new area, avail new classroom space for our small groups and classes, and make the total facility much more enjoyable and user friendly.  If you weren’t able to be with us Sunday, I really need you to be one of the 700 who enable us to FINISH STRONG.  AS OF TODAY, WE HAVE 150.  Let’s pray that God will help us to wipe out this remaining 10%.

    RAY VANDERLAAN – FEBRUARY 4-6, 2011 – As you know, with Ray’s accident, he had to reschedule.  Our new dates of February 4-6 will be here before we know it.  If you held on to your ticket, it’s covered.  Tickets will be available in just a few more days, same cost ($25), same schedule.  Would you put this on your calendar and save these important dates?  This is a weekend you’re not going to want to miss!

    THE SUNDAYS OF NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER – This Sunday we’re going to have a chance to really appreciate our GREAT VOLUNTEERS.  We’re calling it  HEROES.  It’s going to be a great morning.  The last Sunday of November is actually the first Sunday of ADVENT.  I’ll be launching our new Series:  CHRISTMAS – WHERE HEAVEN MEETS EARTH.  December provides tremendous opportunities for outreach.  Why not INVITE someone to the Ladies Christmas Dessert, the Christmas musical, the Sundays of December, or even the Christmas Eve service?  Each of these will be a fantastic experience for anyone who attends.  Don’t miss the season that launched our relationship with Jesus.  You’ll be amazed how open people will be to your warm invitation.

    Let me close by telling you how grateful I am for each of you.  Every time I sit down to write the church family, I have so many faces flash through my mind, and I’m thankful for every one of you!  We have a tremendous future together.  It’s a new season for Salem First. Let’s live close to God and each other.  Let’s include those who have yet to know Him.  Let’s join God where He’s at work around us. Jerri and I, along with the rest of the staff, pray regularly for you.  Thanks for being such a great church family!

    November 2, 2010

    Dear First Family,

    I’m writing to you today with disappointment. As you know, we’ve been planning on a special Spiritual Emphasis Weekend with Ray Vander Laan this coming weekend. Last night we were notified Ray took a terrible fall from a ladder he was working on and it resulted in him being seriously injured with cracked ribs and a broken pelvis. Would you take a moment and lift him in your prayers right now? I know it will make a difference.

    So, what does this mean? It means that you’ve got Friday and Saturday off, but Sunday is still going to be a GREAT DAY! If you purchased tickets you have some options. Ray will be rescheduling so you can hang onto your tickets to use later, or you can return your tickets to the church office for a refund. Thank you for your understanding! You’re the best!

    On another note…
    ~ We had an outstanding Lord’s Day here at Salem First. Great reminders that God can use our suffering, hardship, difficulties, trials to advance the kingdom. Let me encourage you – don’t waste your suffering. Let God do something good in you and through you.
    ~ If you’re looking for a good study to be a part of right now, I’ve just launched JESUS’ DOZEN – on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm in the London Room. It’s an in-depth look at the 12 disciples. Would love to have you join us. I promise, you’ll grow!
    ~ A special THANKS to Ken Feetham and the tireless crew of volunteers that have labored faithfully through rain and shine to get all of our landscaping in place. Water lines, sprinkler systems, plants and trees. WOW, does it look beautiful. Way to go crew!

    Dear First Family,
    A quick update…
    Sunday Reflections – What a fantastic Lord’s Day! We were all touched by the testimonies of those who were baptized, not to mention the SPONTANEOUS response of those who were prompted by the Spirit to step up and go public with their faith. WOW. This never gets old! CONGRATULATIONS to all those who were baptized. Look for your names in this Sunday’s Worship Folder.

    Construction Update – There is a whole lot of dust being stirred by a group of FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS. Inside, there is a brand new classroom being made, by swapping the existing offices and moving them to 110, and turning those office rooms into one large classroom. The convenience of this location is going to be a real plus. Add to this, the ongoing LANDSCAPING efforts. It’s looking so AWESOME. Our thanks to all the volunteers who are making both of these things possible. Way to go guys and gals!

    October/November Events – Here’s a brief look at what you can expect to enjoy over the upcoming weeks:

    This Sunday – The final message in our series PARADOX. We will enjoy COMMUNION together, and we’ll be welcoming in NEW MEMBERS. Come expecting an outstanding morning.

    SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEKEND: November 5-7 – RAY VANDER LAAN. As you know, this will be an UNFORGETTABLE weekend for us. This is designed to be a SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEKEND. It will be a tremendous boost to our Church Family. I’d like to make one last appeal to each of you to not pass on this one. Sacrifice the $25 for yourself, and you’ll not have any regrets about what God will do. I’d like to ask you to join me THIS SUNDAY EVENING AT 6 PM, for an hour of prayer for this special weekend.

    November 14th – State of the Church – We’ll have a chance to hear about what’s been going on in the Church over the past year. This will be insightful, informative, and challenging. I hope you’ll make sure you’re here for this one.

    November 21st – HEROES – We’ll be targeting servanthood and honoring VOLUNTEERS. With November being a month of Thanksgiving, what a great time to express our gratitude to God and to all of our volunteers!

    November 28th – First Sunday of Advent – We’ll kick off the new CHRISTMAS SERIES: Where Heaven Meets Earth. It will be a great way to set us up for an awesome Christmas season.

    The lineup is an exciting one. It’s also a great opportunity to include others. I want to commend you for your INVITING efforts. You guys have done a great job with this. Let’s continue this as we head into the Holiday season, because it’s one of those times when people are more open than usual to an invitation to something special.     Dear First Family,

    Got a minute? Just wanted to share a couple of important things with you. So, I’ll get right to it.

    THANK YOU – You guys did a great job at reaching out and inviting people to join you at church last Sunday. THANK YOU for your dedicated effort. I had such a great time meeting many new people, and it was because you dared to pray for them, and then risked inviting them to experience a worship service at Salem 1st. There were people here who did some significant SPIRITUAL BUSINESS WITH GOD. So, I want to encourage you to keep it up. Of all the people I met, they all came because someone had invited them. I didn’t meet a single person who came because of the Yellow Pages, or even our Website.  The power of inviting someone is still strong. Let’s capitalize on it as we head into the Holiday season.

    LIGHTING ENHANCEMENTS AND SECOND SERVICE CHANGES – Some of you have noticed and remarked about some of the new equipment and screens in the Sanctuary. They are part of an upgrade designed to enhance the lighting in both worship services, as well as provide a significant improvement to our display capabilities in the second hour. The goal for our two distinct worship services has always been to provide the very best experience possible for those attending our church. With five generations currently in attendance the challenges are considerable. One of those challenges is reaching younger generations that are much more visually oriented. Fortunately for us, one of our oldest and largest Nazarene churches, Bethany First Church (Oklahoma City), has already been leading the way in responding to these challenges. After visiting with their team this past Easter we began to prepare for changes in the second service we felt would better connect us with the people that are the future of our church. It's our hope over the next few weeks we'll have everything in place and working. One of the benefits, long-term, will be the introduction of many new students and young adults to our worship, sound, and front-door ministries. While we still need a major renovation of lights, sound, and power supply in the Sanctuary this will serve us well short-term. Additionally, some of this equipment can be used later in the New Addition.

    NOVEMBER – What a month this is going to be around Salem First. We kick off the month with a SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEKEND. As you know RAY VANDERLAAN will be with us NOVEMBER 5-7. I hope you’ve secured your tickets. Don’t put this off. For all of those who attend, your heart will be so touched and you’ll make significant spiritual headway. What a great way for our Church Family to move forward in our walk with God. This is a great invite event. Please be praying for this important weekend, and make plans to be a part of it.

    NOVEMBER 14, I’ll be taking the morning to give a detailed update about the STATE OF THE CHURCH. With the “finish line” in sight, we have much to celebrate and much to consider as we look at our future. Plan for a great morning.

    Dear First Family,

    I’ve been anxious to sit down and scratch out a few lines to you, and I say this because we’ve got some OUTSTANDING events coming our way. Let me quickly tell you about them.

    10-10-10 – October 10th is just around the corner. We’ve been praying and asking God to show us some people in our lives that don’t yet know Him. As we identify who these people are, we would diligently pray for their salvation, and then… risk inviting them to join us at church on 10/10. So, we’re planning a wonderful morning that will include a simple salvation message. I want to encourage you, there’s still time to invite. There’s still time to pray. There’s still time to believe that God can and will reach your friend or family member’s heart. Come expecting a great morning!

    October 17 – Pastor Keith Ritter will be speaking in both services. This will be a treat for us as he and I trade pulpits and I have a chance to be with the OASIS family. Our desire is to keep the two churches connected and to be an encouragement to one another. Keith will be preaching a piece of our current series, PARADOX.

    October 24 – BAPTISM – We will be celebrating the sacrament of Baptism in just a few weeks. As you know, these are always tremendous times with great testimonies, and you might want to be included. If so, simply contact us here at the office and let us know of your desire. Let’s be praying for these new converts as they take this next step.

    RAY VANDERLAAN – NOVEMBER 5-7 – Here’s a weekend you don’t want to miss. We have a chance to have one of the PREMIER BIBLE TEACHERS in the country coming to spend an entire weekend with us. I cannot over emphasize the impact this will have on everyone who attends. The cost for Friday and Saturday is $25 per person, but this totally offsets any offerings. If you’ve found yourself saying, “Our church could sure use a spiritual shot in the arm, or REVIVING BOOST," this is the weekend that God will use to do some great things. I strongly encourage you to make the sacrifice, get your ticket, include a friend, pray, and come expecting. You’ll not be disappointed!

    Building Completion – We’re coming down to the finish line and it won’t be long before the building construction will be completed. As you know, the construction being finished doesn’t furnish the building. This is a piece that we continue to keep before us. We also want to get started on the CHILDREN’S RELOCATION. Both of these pieces are the remaining projects in the $5.5 million dollar undertaking. At this point, we’ve come 90% of the way in raising funds and giving our pledges. We have 10% left to raise and we’re there! WOW, this is fantastic! But, we’ve got to keep this target in front of us so that we complete the entire project. Thank you for your faithful generosity! If you haven’t been a participant – this is a great time to jump in. We want to get the final $550,000 pledged so we can continue with the in-house construction. Thanks for partnering with us.

  • Missionaries ~ Michael and Diane Chapman

    Hello First Family ~ I just want to remind you of the neat opportunity we have tonight, August 25, 7:00 pm, to hear from some very special missionaries, Mike and Diane Chapman.  Here's a little of their story to whet your appetite! See you there.

    Missionaries ~ Michael and Diane Chapman
    Special Assignment Missionaries Serving in Papua New Guinea

    Michael and Diane Chapman, Special Assignment Missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene, have been serving in Papua New Guinea since December 2007. After 22 years of living in Alaska, they left their home and jobs to answer the call that God placed on their hearts and for their lives to help build the kingdom of God in Papua New Guinea. Serving the Lord and following His call is an adventure that gives Michael and Diane’s life meaning. The exciting journey continues each day for the two special assigned missionaries serving in Papua New Guinea.

    Mike was assigned the responsibility of Project Manager for the Nazarene Health Ministries. Currently, Mike has been assigned to the Melanesia Nazarene Bible College and Teacher College as Construction Consultant. His responsibilities continue to be teaching Papua New Guinea men and women how to manage the work site and develop construction building skills. His thirty years of working and teaching on construction sites around the world has helped him to easily adapt into the Papua New Guinea culture. His experience of running his own company to working with commercial organizations has been very beneficial for all the many variety of projects that are needed and still have to be completed for the Nazarene Health Ministries and Melanesia Nazarene Bible College and Teacher College. As of today, he has completed the new Nazarene Hospital that is open and serving 3000 Papua New Guineans each month in the Western Highlands and others who come from all over Papua New Guinea. Other projects that have been completed in the two years are: new hospital temporary sewer system, new hospital pharmacy, new volunteer Barnabas House (25 bed guest house), and Hydro Electrical Project Design for the hydro dam and plant rebuild project.

    Diane was assigned the responsibility of teacher for the Missionary Children’s Elementary School. The children, who attend come from missionary families who live on the Nazarene Mission Station in Kudjip. The school partners with the Evangelical Brotherhood Church (EBC) to also teach their children from Kugark and Tamil Wagi. The EBC children are learning English as a second language. The total number of students varies each year 6 to 10. Diane is responsible for all subjects that are taught throughout the school day. Volunteers, who come throughout the year help enhance the curriculum and increase the time spent with each student. The students like to learn and work very hard at their assignments. After teaching in the public school for 25 years, teaching in the mission school proves to be very rewarding experience for Diane.

    Mike and Diane are the Work and Witness Coordinators for Papua New Guinea and the Melanesia Field. They organize and host work and witness teams that come to help build projects. There have been five teams come to the field in the past two years. The goal is to have three to four teams each month, so that the needed projects can be built throughout the field and region.

    Mike and Diane have helped and continue to work as a team with all missionaries to help build strong relationships with the local tribes and the Nazarene Mission. The construction projects have been a tool used to introduce and role model Jesus to the workmen and community. Each day begins with devotions and prayer given by a variety of people – local pastors, workmen, doctors, nurses, students to name a few. Mike and Diane have been privileged to speak in several local churches encouraging the workmen and their congregations to live a holy life through the role model of character that is shown in everyday life. Several workmen and women have come to know the Lord from the time spent on the work site, at the church, or in the village. Mike and Diane believe that God uses them each and every day to be an example of what the Bible teaches to live a holy life and to share the gospel with all people.

  • Dear First Family,

    Hey, got a minute? Wanted to tell you something I’ve had on my heart. I love my church. I really do. God changed my life through the local church. I believe that what the church does matters and I have given my life to it.

    When we say we love Jesus but don’t love the church we are basically booing the bride at the wedding…something the Groom won’t tolerate! Yes, the church is full of jacked up, hypocritical people…and there is room for more! There is not a perfect church! BUT…the church is HIS. He said in Matthew 16:18 that He would build it…and…He is! The church was SO important to Him that He gave His life for it, established it and now sits at the head of it. Now, if all of that is true then IT MATTERS! We’re not called to just attend a church…we’re called to belong to one! I think we need to make some changes from membership to ownership. Here’s why: a member has RIGHTS; an owner has RESPONSIBILITIES!

    Sometimes the church finds itself in such a condition that we don’t really want to attend. It happens. And when it does, we basically have 2 options: go somewhere else, or stay and help fix the issues. The church ought to be a place of real celebration, because “once I was LOST, but now I am FOUND”! When that happens – it ought to cause us to get happy. The potential of the church is AMAZING…and Salem First, if God has done great things and been faithful for 98 years, then what could the next number of years look like? God didn’t die on a cross to raise an audience but rather to raise an army…and an army is willing to do whatever it takes to win!

    I want to ask each of you to make a serious commitment with me. Between now and OCTOBER 10, I’d like to have you identify 10 people that you know who are not yet into the Kingdom. I’d like to have you commit to pray daily and diligently for their salvation every day. And later in September, I’d like you to invite them to attend church with you on OCTOBER 10. On that Sunday, we will have an unforgettable morning, and an invitation will be made asking them to invite Jesus into their life. It could be/will be an unforgettable day in the life of our church.

    On August 15 we begin a brand new series, 24 – A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JESUS. It’s going to be great!

    Are you aware that we’re putting forth a great effort to create a new CHURCH DIRECTORY? I need you to stop by and get a quick picture taken. No sales pitch, no special attire, just you – and your family if you have one. We’ll make it quick and easy. You can slip into Room 112 starting this Sunday, August 8, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm, or 5:00 –7:00 pm, and at the same times the following Sunday, August 15. We will also have photo sessions on Wednesday, August 11, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm and at the same times the following Wednesday, August 18. Thanks for your participation!

    One more thing First Family…I really do LOVE MY CHURCH – enough to help us get healthier, reach new people, enjoy a great environment of worship, and connect with people who are regular folks but love Jesus. The challenges are real, and at times there seems to be no shortage, but Jerri and I are here -- we aren’t hopping from church to church every few years. We’ve bought in! Not because everything is perfect. But because we believe that it’s still God’s answer for changing the world. It’s still got great potential for a compelling future. Your faithfulness, commitment, servant heart, and generous spirit always touch me, not to mention your phenomenal flexibility during our building project.

    I love this church…and am so thankful for those of you who have taken ownership and invested time and treasure into this place and have been a part of what God is doing!  I love my church…and I love you guys. Thanks for allowing me the honor of serving you as pastor! We’ve had some amazing times these past 10 years…but THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!

  • Some Great Lessons We Could Learn From The iPhone 4

    If you have paid any attention to the new iPhone and some of the challenges it has, then you’ll appreciate this piece I ran across that I thought worth sharing with you. Enjoy the read, and let’s heed the message. Bless you this day!

    The recent problems with the iPhone 4 have been interesting to watch.  Basically…there was/is a design flaw. (I can see/hear the Apple evangelists screaming “you don’t understand” as I type this!)  The antenna was placed into the phone in such a way that it is concealed; however, the design of this phone also lends to the antenna being covered up and calls being lost/dropped.  SO…Apple called a HUGE conference last Friday and announced their solution – they are going to provide free cases to cover up the phone (that will force the user to hold the phone differently, thus “fixing” the problem).

    As I watched this scenario develop I sighed (NOT because of the phone deal, I have a Blackberry…it works really great).  The reason I think this was a really bad idea is that it didn’t address the problem…it just covered it up!  At the end of the day the product is still flawed, no matter how “pretty” the cover that the iPhone users get!

    We do the same thing SO many times as followers of Christ…we try to cover up the problem instead of dealing with it (Isa. 29:13).
    We cover up the fact that we are addicted to porn by refusing to repent…instead we go to church and sing as loud as we can, thinking we can “cover up our problem” rather than dealing with it.  We cover up the fact that we are dating someone that we know God doesn’t want us to be with…instead we justify what we are doing by at least getting them to come to church with us.  We won’t “deal” with our disobedience…rather we try to cover it up with our made up morality.  We cover up the fact that we are living in disobedience by surrounding ourselves with people who will affirm our dysfunction rather than lovingly call us out (Hebrews 10:24-25).  We tell Jesus that we will follow Him…that we will do “whatever” He asks–but then He hits on “THAT” issue, you know, the one we’ve always struggled with…and instead of dealing with it, repenting, asking for help–we begin to cover up our sin with religious phrases and copying and pasting Scripture.

    I really could go on and on here…but the question is this (for all of us): is there anything that you are trying to cover up that God is specifically trying to deal with?  Because…the thing I’ve learned about God is that HE is relentless, He is AFTER our hearts…and our rituals and religion is worthless in His sight if we are refusing to submit and obey to what HE is saying (Ezekiel 14:1-6).  I know it's hard when God comes after our hearts…and PRIDE is a reason many people choose to cover up their sin rather than confess it. People FEAR the consequences of confession; however, the consequences of concealing our sin are SO MUCH GREATER than the consequences of confession.

    Romans 8:1 tells us God didn’t send Jesus to die on a cross so we can cover things up but rather so that we could confess, repent and THEN live in freedom!

     It’s Monday and You Just Might Need This

    Monday is the day so many are tempted to quit, give up and/or throw in the towel. Don’t do it! Don’t quit! I’ll tell you why: Galatians 6:9 tells us Let us not grow weary in well doing, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up.

    Here’s a thought I would share because, well, it’s Monday!

    It is not the critic who counts, not the one who points out how the strong man stumbled or how the doer of deeds might have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena. Whose face is marred with sweat and dust and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause. Who, if he wins, knows the triumph of high achievement, and who, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. ~ Teddy Roosevelt

    On another note, it was a FABULOUS SUNDAY at Salem First. WOW! Some 250+ kids for the week of Bible School, and then, to have them invade our day yesterday – WHAT LIFE they brought! Meeting so many new people I felt like I was a bird dog in the middle of a bunch of ducks. It was fantastic!

    Trevor, Ellen, Roseanne Bowles and a host of TREMENDOUS VOLUNTEERS pulled off one of the greatest weeks we’ve ever had here for Vacation Bible School. WAY TO GO GANG! The presentation yesterday was powerful and gave us great insight into what our capabilities are in connecting with young families.

    Church Family, THANK YOU for your generous support, loving spirit, and powerful prayers. Lives are being changed and we are working hard to connect with many new people. Thanks for being “others focused” as you walk through the church door. Finding a new person (someone you don’t know) and reaching out to them is HUGE! Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel.

    THIS SUNDAY is going to be another outstanding day of worship and connection. I know it’s July 4th, but let’s gather and worship together. I’ll be speaking to you about a very important subject that is timelier than you can imagine. I promise, you’ll walk away saying, “That was worth coming to.”

  • The Flotilla Crisis

                                              ISRAEL UPDATE – JUNE 2010

    Dear Salem First Family,
    Could I take just a few minutes and give you an important update on what happened this week concerning Israel and the Flotilla encounter? As you know, Israel has found itself once again in the crosshairs of the world, especially the Muslim world. The Flotilla Crisis – which has been presented as an insensitive attack by Israel – has once again not been reported accurately, nor will it. Jer and I had the privilege of being on a conference call with Pastor John Hagee on Thursday, and we had the opportunity to hear first hand from Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Daniel Ayalore. Here are some of the facts that he presented, which are not making the news:
    - This was a planned event. There is an agenda against Israel that targets raising the levels of hatred toward it. Behind this “humanitarian effort” is the workings of Hamas and other Muslim Radical groups
    - The Flotilla is listed as the IHH – which is a non government agency in Turkey that has ties to Hamas and Hezbollah. Turkey is where the flotilla began.
    - Their mission was to break the inspection blockade that keeps just any vessel from getting into Gaza, because this blockade is intended to prevent further terrorism.
    - Israel not only has communicated continually with everyone that they will help facilitate any aid that needs to get to Gaza, but they have remained committed to actually make sure it does get there.
    - Israel has ensured a corridor for humanitarian efforts to pass into Gaza.
    - 5 of the 6 ships in the Flotilla allowed the Israeli government to inspect them. Ship #6 had prepared an ambush – any peace activists were put below deck.
    - On deck there were about 80 violent people, armed with knives, pipes, protection vests and gas masks. They refused to let the IDF onboard.
    - As the IDF forced themselves on board, they were attacked.
    - Thousands upon thousands of dollars were found in envelopes that were in the pockets of the mercenaries.
    - The goal was to embarrass Israel and make Israel look like the bad guy to the world.
    - On Thursday another ship headed to Gaza, which was from Ireland. It was contacted by Israel and told that it would escort the ship to Gaza and help assure its cargo was handled appropriately. All they asked was to be able to inspect the ship. There was no response of any kind from the Irish ship.
    - All to say, Israel was targeted, presented in an untruthful, bad light. A variety of its soldiers were beaten and injured. What appeared to be a “humanitarian peace effort” evidenced itself for what it was – a puppet of Hamas, and played the perfect victim role.
    - The State of Israel approached the organizers of the flotilla - prior to their departure and, even while at sea - and invited them to dock at the Port of Ashdod for the sake of transferring their cargo to Gaza, subject to security inspection. The organizers of the flotilla intentionally ignored repeated warnings - including messages from the European Union—and rejected offers by Israel and Egypt to transfer humanitarian goods.
    People are not starving in Gaza. In fact, Israel has delivered 2/3 of a ton of supplies to every man, woman and child in Gaza this year alone. The need for the blockade comes from the terrorist nature of Hamas, which allows and has encouraged terrorists to use Gaza as a launching pad for sending rockets towards Israeli civilians.

    Israel has expressed and continues to express its desire for peace and continues to extend its hand to all those who are willing to participate in moving forward to true peace. Israel's actions are aimed at blocking arms and explosives shipments to Hamas, which is at war with the Jewish state. Since Israel gave up all of Gaza in 2005 with hopes for peace, Hamas and other terrorists operating from Gaza have fired more than 7,000 rockets and mortar shells aimed at Israeli civilians. Why wouldanyone wantto allow Iran-backed Hamas to re-arm with more rockets?

    To read the international press or listen to certain world leaders, you would think that Israel attacked the LOVE BOAT. As the Prime Minister of Israel pointed out, this was not a love boat - this was a boat of hatred. Israel's soldiers were attacked with metal bars, baseball bats, chairs, knives, machetes and even their own captured guns. So, there you have it in a nutshell. But it’s not over.

    Friends, I think you’ll agree, this is a critical time for us to stand with Israel. This is a great time for us to be lifting Israel in our prayers. Pray that God will reveal Himself through this crisis so that the World will see God fights for Israel. Pray that God will use this event to open the eyes of His people to their Messiah. Pray, as the scripture tells us, “for the peace of Jerusalem.” Yesterday, the Foreign Affairs Minister couldn’t thank us (and you) enough for our love and support. He appealed to us to help get the truth out, and to continue to hold forth support for his country.

    Jer and I determined this week that she will be there in Washington D.C. in July for the Christians United For Israel gathering. She, along with others, will speak to the leaders on Capital Hill regarding the Nation’s ongoing support for Israel. We believe this voice certainly needs to be heard in Washington. Thanks for your prayers for Israel. They do make a difference. When you have a bit of time, get alone and read through Isaiah 62. The call is that we not be silent. This is where we need to stand.

  • "It's Everybody Time"

    SUNDAY REFLECTIONS – May 16, 2010
    - “It’s EVERYBODY TIME.” That was the message yesterday. What’s that mean? It simply means that God is on the move in regard to our future and we all want to be included. As we take a purposeful look at the current makeup of our flock, it’s evident that in 5-10 years there is going to be a dramatic difference. That’s why it’s so imperative that we make a place for all ages, especially young families.
    - It means that we need everybody on board in the areas of serving, giving, inviting and attending. As we head into the summer months, these are the ones that take the biggest toll on us. I’d like to ask you to really give priority to these arenas, and please understand, this has nothing to do with getting away for some needed and well deserved vacation.
    - It means that we all stay aware of what’s on God’s heart concerning our church family, the unchurched, and our city.
    - It means that we keep the church and its families in our prayers.
    - It means we move into a strong future together.
    A few questions:
    - What do our tears say about us? What do we cry over? Does what breaks God’s heart, break ours?
    - What do you sense God is wanting to do in our church?
    - Have you connected with anyone new at the church lately, or reached out to them?
    - Are you aware that this coming Sunday is the last Sunday we will be able to use the annex? The students will be moving into Lower Rickard, and the current classes will be transitioning into the gym. By the way… a huge THANK YOU to the Serendipity Class, Cornerstone Class, and Open Heart Class for their fantastic flexibility!
    This Sunday is going to be a wonderful Lord’s Day around here. It’s a great chance to invite and include someone who needs to hear Good News.
    One final piece: Yesterday when I shared about the remaining need of raising the last $700,000 to complete the $5.5 million on the project, I was reminded that we’ve just completed 12 months of the 36 we targeted. We’ve got 24 months and counting to complete the cost of this task. GOD IS WITH US! He’s brought us this far, He’ll see us through!

    SUNDAY REFLECTIONS

    April 25, 2010

    What a great day we had yesterday! The Lord continues to pour out His Spirit upon us! Boy, are we blessed! Okay, here’s a quick rundown that I think you’ll appreciate:

    We turned 30 cars away yesterday from being able to park a bit closer to the church. What does this mean? Here’s what it means: We need as many as possible to use the PARK and RIDE on Hawthorne and Market streets. I know that many of you share the same heart that I do, in that we give our VISITORS priority. Can you help me out with that over the next number of weeks! THANKS – Really!

    God continues to bring NEW PEOPLE through our doors. Here’s something that happened yesterday. A new couple stood in the hallway while numbers of people passed by. Pastor Rich observed this for a bit, and then took the initiative to connect with this new YOUNG couple. The problem was that NO ONE took the time to stop and reach out to them. I’d like to ask each of us to be more intentional about seeking out those that we see as NEW, and connect up with them. It will MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

    Got a CAR you’re looking to give to Jesus? We’ve got a single mom who is in great need of transportation. If you feel prompted to donate a vehicle, please let us know. She will feel like God gave her the world. We don’t need anything fancy, just dependable.

    HERE’S WHAT’S COMING IN MAY:

    THIS SUNDAY ~ Dr. David Alexander, President of Northwest Nazarene University will be with us to bring greetings and updates from the school. This will be a great chance to meet him and hear his heart. We’ve got a great day planned. Don’t miss this one.

    MAY 9TH ~ PHILIP ZIMMERMANN will be with us. You already know this will be a fantastic Lord’s Day around Salem First. He will be giving us an update on the work there in Germany, and challenging each of us from God’s Word. We’ll also be honoring the MOMS as this is Mother’s Day.

    MAY 16th ~ We’ll take some time during the service to give the flock an UPDATE on the building project. This will be timely for us as a congregation because it keeps us informed and on the same page together. I hope you’ll make this particular Sunday a real priority.

    Each of you makes a great contribution to the church family. Your faithfulness, prayers, partnership and encouragement is all used by God to make Salem First a wonderful place to worship, and a powerful force in the Kingdom.   • Monday Morning

    Five Quick Thoughts On Monday Morning… April 5, 2010
    A few things I wanted to say to our church after a great day yesterday…

    #1 –THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to volunteer this weekend! I am constantly touched at the relentless dedication that our volunteers show week after week. A church is not effective when the pastor ministers to the people but rather when the body ministers to the body…and this weekend SO MANY OF YOU served Jesus by serving others…and heaven is going to be more crowded because you took the time to do so.

    #2 – We had many new people yesterday, and at our service Friday night. WOW. I got to meet a number of them. Way to go SALEM FIRST FAMILY. You reached out and invited friends and family and they came!

    #3–Let’s keep doing what it takes to get people to church. Don’t give up on someone because they didn’t come…or they came but did not receive Christ. Every week we are going to go all out to make sure the Gospel is clear…it’s not just an Easter thing for us…and there are SO MANY in our communities that still do not know Christ! Remember…we are not a mega church; we are a neighborhood-church with a BIG VISION!

    #4 –My prayer these days for our church is that we will experience an AWAKENING! Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that we could have nice church services…but so that people could be reconciled to God. I am asking God to move in such an undeniable way that ALL of us are dedicated to live out John 13:34-35 every single day of our lives…NOT just on Sunday!

    #5 – I’ll close with a few housekeeping items:

    - Fletch (Steve Fletcher) will be with us for the next 3 Sunday evenings. He’ll be taking us on a deeper look at the RESURRECTION OF CHRIST and the RESTORATION of Peter. These will be fantastic times. Lower Rickard – 6:00 pm. Don’t miss this one.

    - BREAKFAST for guys who like BREAKFAST this Saturday morning, April 10, 8:00 am. It will be a great time.

    - Ongoing construction creates intriguing adventures.THANK YOU for your amazing willingness to adjust, shuttle, exercise patience, remain generous, pray and remain positive and confident. YOU ARE THE BEST!

    We begin a brand new series this Sunday: CSI– An investigation of the stories of Jesus. Come expecting a great day.

  • Authentic Jesus

    SUNDAY REFLECTIONS – March 28,2010
    A few thoughts on a GREAT DAY at Salem First…

    We were reminded once again that our Church truly is, “A place of Restoration.” We witnessed the public declaration of Christ by some 30 people as we celebrated their Baptism. The Church was on fire with great rejoicing and celebrating. Way to go Salem First!

    Evangelism is not an option for the church…it is a command! Matthew 28:18-20 is our mandate.

    People that meet Jesus have a desire for others to meet Him! We saw this so clearly with those who were baptized.The power of their testimonies was unforgettable. WOW, did the transforming power of Jesus light up our flock! I was reminded, our job is not to legislate the morality of people who don’t know Christ…but rather to introduce them to Him! We catch ‘em and He cleans them.

    The world will NOT BE CHANGED by what we believe but rather how we behave!

    I am NOT praying for merely an amazing church service next week…but rather an Encounter with the LIVING Christ that will change lives. The majority of our city is unchurched.On any given Sunday, only about 20% of the population is in church. That leaves over 100,000 unchurched people that we can reach out to. Take a look at that line again…EVERY single one of those people have a SOUL…THEY MATTER TO GOD and they SHOULD matter to us! JESUS changes people. It’s not our job to change someone…but rather to get them to a place where they can meet Jesus and HE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!

    I want you to ask you to join me this week in DOING all that we can to invite people to church, and secondly, BEGGING God to do something amazing this weekend. Church…let’sPRAY like crazy and work as hard as we can to INVITE people to church next weekend…and let’s trust HIM to be the difference maker!!!

    I hope you all have an amazing week! I can’t WAIT to see what Jesus does at Salem First next Sunday!

Gerald & Cara Pygott will be serving up a delicious breakfast. Let’s plan to “break bread” and fellowship together, and then we’ll be on our way by 9:00 am.

  • Sunday Reflections: Feb 7, 2010

    What a great Lord’s Day we enjoyed together!  Have you noticed that we’ve had more Sundays of sunshine than rain?  Love it!  God has been good to keep us dry while we’ve adjusted to the changes in our facilities.  You continue to do a tremendous job in meeting the parking challenges.  THANKS!

    We got off to a strong start in our series for the month, From The Seats To The Streets.  Some of the things worth our consideration this week are…

     Incarnational living (allowing God to have complete ability to live His will out through us) is the standard that God has called us to as Christ followers.

     We cannot allow ourselves to define our Christianity by how busy we are with church activities, Bible studies, small groups, etc., but by whether all of our knowledge of what we learn from God is resulting in, “our love for Him being expressed by meeting the needs of others.”

     We will eventually get stuck in our spiritual growth if all we do is consume and never give.  There comes a time when our life is no longer about ourselves.  This is so important, because we do not want our church to one day be a monument of what God USED to do.

     Passion Deficiency Syndrome has hit the church. Did you ever see the movie, The Passion of the Christ?  Did you notice it was not called, The Boring Religious Obligation of the Christ?

     We don’t want to be a church that builds an audience that gathers on the weekend, but rather an ARMY the moves out to MAKE A DIFFERENCE on a regular basis. We often times prefer to visit with God on Sunday rather than have Him invade our lives.”

     Jesus said He would make us to be Fishers of Men~Matthew 4:18.  If we are going to follow Jesus then our hearts must beat for the lost.

     We (the church) have a HUGE responsibility we are here because we are personally responsible for the evangelization of the entire world before the second coming of Jesus Christ.  We cannot afford to forget this!

    I believe the church has the power to checkmate the devil!

    In John 17:14-18, Jesus prayed that His followers would not be taken out of the world…but too many of us are trying to do just that!  IT IS VERY HARD TO CHANGE A WORLD THAT YOU ARE NOT IN!

    Contrary to the thinking of so many, Christianity is not a behavioral modification program.  Think about these things.  Aim your life at incarnational living.  Come expecting a FANTASTIC day THIS SUNDAY!

  • Sunday Reflections: Jan 31, 2010

    We had a tremendous Lord’s Day at Salem First.  You did it again!  We made it hard for you to attend because of the parking adventure, BUT YOU JUST KEEP SHOWING UP!  WOW!  Your dedication touches me, our staff and most of all, JESUS!

    We had a chance to be reminded by God’s Word that WE are a Fellowship of formerly LOST PEOPLE… who have been REDEEMED and RECONCILED to God, and that He is making our CHURCH a beautiful DWELLING PLACE for Himself.

    We were reminded that God will, at times, use TRAGEDY to get our attention. What a great conversation with MARTY Lupoli!  Thanks for loving him! Now, watch how God is going to use him.

    Our NEW SERIES begins this Sunday – “Out of The Seats and Into The Streets.”  This is going to help keep us focused on being a MISSIONAL CHURCH – A church with a vision and purpose. 

    Ephesians 2:10 is true about YOU…He didn’t create you to be a chia pet…but an instrument used for His glory.  I challenge you to MEMORIZE this verse as we get into this series.  We will never do what God wants until we see who He is!

    AND…we will never discover who God is apart from reading HIS word.  I challenge you to spend this MONTH of February reading the Bible.  I believe that if you’ll commit to this that you’ll hear His voice clearer during this month than you’ve ever heard Him before.

    When a person understands WHO God is and WHAT God’s done…surrender is a natural result.  A person who is completely surrendered to God CANNOT sit still when He clearly says to move.

    I’ll close with a quote from C.S. Lewis that has rocked me deeply: “Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak.  We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.  We are far too easily pleased!”

    We serve an amazing God…and He is offended NOT when we ask BIG…but when we don’t ask at all! He still AMAZES me!  See you Sunday!

  • January 6, 2010 Updates

     

    MARKET STREET – BETWEEN 17TH AND CAPITOL STREETS – IS NOW CLOSED until early February for a City of Salem sewer construction project. You will need to detour to the church via D Street rather than Market.

    SHUTTLE SERVICE FROM CORNERSTONE PLAZA (on Park & Market Streets) will run this Sunday between 7:45 am and 12:45 pm. Please note: The Park & Ride on Hawthorne will NOT BE USED.

    Sunday Reflections – January 3, 2010

    Here are a few thoughts on a GREAT DAY at Salem Naz…

    It was a tremendous day of CELEBRATION!  You really came through with making the effort to be here at the close of a long holiday break.  You really came through in helping us with the PARKING ADVENTURE!  WOW!  You were fantastic!

    Our volunteers were also FANTASTIC – shuttle drivers, parking lot attendants, greeters, children’s workers, nursery workers and more.  Each of you did a GREAT job to help make Sunday an HISTORIC DAY!

    The sense of GOD’S PRESENCE and the gathering of the Salem First church family combined to give the services an air of excitement and expectation.  What a celebration we had! 

    This past Sunday really sets the stage for a tremendous year.  2010 can be one of the most powerful, meaningful, and unforgettable years we’ve had around First Church for a long time.  We need to capitalize on the momentum and reach out to invite others to be a part of what God is doing: CHANGING LIVES.

    There were a number of comments and remarks made by readers of the Statesman Journal in response to the GROUNDBREAKING article.  If you took the time to read any of the comments, you could be discouraged. HOWEVER, I was reminded that we were all once aliens and strangers from God and that we were full of rebellion and disdain toward Godly things.  Romans 5:8 tells us that it was “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

    The feelings expressed by onlookers reminded me again that we need to continue to connect with our neighborhood, its schools, its association board, through what we currently do and even more, so that they do see and know that Salem First Church of the Nazarene is a blessing to have as a neighbor. 

    Thanks for your ongoing support, prayers, participation, giving, volunteering, and faith that God has great things in store for us together.

    I’m so thankful for the past, but more excited about the future. 

    See you Sunday!  Come expecting something great.

  • Christmas Weekend Reflections

    Christmas weekend held some great moments.

    At the close of the first Christmas Eve service I had a great surprise.  A
    young guy who had been attending the church last spring and summer was
    electrocuted with 17,500 volts in August.  He was burned over 75% of his
    body both INSIDE and OUT. He is a pure miracle for two reasons: 1) People
    who get electrocuted like this don't live, and 2) He wasn't ready to meet
    Jesus.  But he is now! He was able to attend the Christmas Eve service.
    WOW! What a Savior!  You'll be hearing more about this story, so stay tuned.

    Has there ever been a time in your life that you were closer to God than you
    are right now?  If so...why not make a move toward God as we embark on a
    brand new year together?  He wants you to come home!

    Christmas time is a reminder that God RAN to us...He came here so we could
    come home!!!  Scope out the story in Luke 15.

    We had a chance to be reminded that we serve a God who is faithful to
    FULFILL HIS WORD NO MATTER WHAT!  Matthew's Nativity story has taken on a
    whole new meaning for me, and I hope for you.

    Our "behind the scenes" look at the fulfillment of the Old Testament
    prophecies about Jesus has been powerful and refreshing.  This is the God we
    serve. He's headed into 2010 with us!  Do you trust Him?

    I want to ask each of you to join me in reaching out to people you know who
    would be great to invite to church this Sunday.  GroundBreaking is a great
    platform for a NEW START in the life of a person.  Let's plan on getting
    here early due to the extra time needed for parking.

    Remember, overflow parking for this Sunday will be at the PARK AND RIDE on
    Market and Hawthorne.  We'll begin picking people up at 7:45 am.  Come
    expecting a tremendous day.

    I'm asking the 9:15 crowd to stay for the 11:00 service where we can
    CELEBRATE TOGETHER the Greatness of our GOD!

    That's about it...it's been a great weekend and it's been an awesome year to
    watch God work!!!  Thanks for being part of the SALEM FIRST FAMILY.  Our
    greatest and most powerful days lay just ahead.

  • Seasonal Reflections

    Dear First Family,

    I’ve been reflecting on both the season that we’re in, as well as the busyness of December.  Sometimes I wonder if the two go well together, or if they clash most of the time.  So, yesterday I had a bit of time to reflect and I believe it was most productive, because I came up with a list of things that I sometimes so easily forget.  I’ll share it with you…

    #1 – Jesus loves His church more than I do…so any “freaking out” that I do is totally unnecessary!

    #2 – The same God who allowed the storm I am going through will also see me through it.

    #3 – The results in ministry are NOT totally up to me!

    #4 – Success in ministry will not be measured by how big my church is…but rather by whether or not my wife and kids really love me when this thing is over!  I can probably get another church…but I can NEVER get another Jerri, Brandon, Brock or Barry.

    #5 – God came into this world in the person of Christ to capture my heart and get involved in seeing me through my “stuff.”  Isn’t that fantastic?

    #6 – Eternity IS reality!  Every single person I see is someone who WILL spend eternity somewhere…and I need to embrace that fact with urgency!  (See Romans 10:14 and Romans 10:17)

    #7 – Being busy doesn’t equal being godly!

    #8 – Sometimes fighting the good fight means choosing your battles carefully.

    #9 – The same power that brought Jesus back from the dead is living inside of me…and IN HIM I can do ANYTHING that He commands me to do!

    It’s my prayer that this will be a meaningful and fulfilling Christmas as we remember that – no matter what things we are facing, experiencing, or working through, all of those things and more are the whole reason why Jesus came.I’m thanking God for each of you today.  

    Thanks for your partnership in ministry and for all of the prayers, investment, and love that you have extended this past year for JESUS.  He sees every bit of it, and He will honor you for it.  Because of your selflessness, many lives have been touched both here and around the world.

    Dear First Family, Happy December!  Where has our year gone?  Hey, I wanted to get this note out to you because it has some really good information in it that I think you’ll appreciate.  So, here goes…

    UNIQUE GIVING OPPORTUNITY –  DONATED ITEMS: A BUILDING FUND BONANZA!

    A beautiful silver tea set was donated to the church by one of our members.  Her heart's desire was to do something significant for our new building.  She gave something precious, something she'd had in her family for years.  Today the price of silver is higher than it's been in a long time.  Others of have asked about this.   Most of us have items of value we could donate.  The biggest hurdle is always expertise; expertise in knowing WHAT will sell, and HOW to sell it. 

     

    That expertise has appeared in the form of MARK PARRISH.  The sales tool is EBAY.  Mark has a background in the buying and selling of goods in this vast, online world.  The board has agreed to enlist his services to help in the marketing of items donated to the church. Mark is being paid for his help.

    CHRISTMAS MUSICAL – As you know, Carol and the entire Music/Drama Department have been working diligently to get ready for this year’s Christmas Presentation – Four Tickets To Christmas.  This provides us with a tremendous INVITE EVENT. I’d like to ask you to be very purposeful in reaching out with an invitation to those around you. Your friends, family and co-workers will have an outstanding experience that will make their Christmas season better.  Invite tickets are still available at the office and Welcome Center.  Let’s pack out each of these 4 performances.  Please be praying for all those who are involved, as well as those who attend.  An invitation to accept Christ will be made at each presentation.    I think that God’s Kingdom will be advanced this month of December through Salem First.

    GROUND BREAKING CELEBRATION – Yes!  January 3rd will be an unforgettable day in the life of Salem First.  We’ll be gathering to celebrate the launch of our EXTEND THE VISION project.  We’ve all worked hard, and been waiting a long time for this moment.  So, let’s celebrate what God has done and is going to do.  Here’s how it will work:  We will have our regular 1st hour service at 9:15 am, and then I’m asking all of us to come together for the 11:00 am service, which will include some worship, acknowledgment of special people, hearing from a few of our key leaders in the project, and a reminder of who we are and why we do what we do.  We’ll wrap up the morning by going outside for the groundbreaking celebration.  By the way, we could really use some of the pictures that you might have of the church in the previous years.  If we could borrow them (soon) it would help us with what we want to put together for the celebration.

    You’ll be hearing much about the “PARKING SHIFT.”  We will be shuttling people from North High School, and our Parking Lot Team will be assisting us in helping us fill our parking lots as well as some directed off street parking.  Thanks for being flexible. I’d like us to give as much priority as possible to our visitors/guests and our senior adults to be able to use the 16th street parking lot.  We’ll keep you informed.  You’ll also be hearing much more about how you can stay up with all of the projects progress through the “Construction Cam,” which you’ll be able to log onto the website and see the process in real time.  We have so much to rejoice about, so set this date as a priority and let’s celebrate God’s goodness together.

    DECEMBER SERIES – “And It Came To Pass…”  During this month I’ll be speaking about the fulfillment of God’s promises that changed the world.  It will be a unique look at the Christmas story and I know that you’ll really enjoy it.  Once again, why not reach out and invite someone to join you for worship this season?

    STANDING WITH ISRAEL – Next Tuesday evening we will be hosting a Standing With Israel evening.  It will be in the Lower Rickard at 7:00 pm and it will be led by the regional director of Christians United For Israel (CUFI).  This is a great chance to show support for Israel.

    As you can see, there’s much going on around the church.  Thanks for being a part and for your continued faithfulness in prayer, giving and serving.  You guys are simply the best!
