The Media

There are so many things that vie for our children's time it's no wonder that many of them have little to no attention span. As parents, you get to help your children learn what things they will value enough to give their time to as they get older. Everything from how much time is spent in front of your television, if you have one (If not I applaud you), to when and how they spend time with the Word each day. This coming Sunday we will be focusing our "Everyday Survival" series on the topic of Media and how a Christian kid should deal with this ever present bombardment from some of the world's worst influences. This last Sunday Pastor Joshua kicked off a new series with the High Schoolers called "Media Frenzy." At the beginning of the service all the students took a poll to see how much time they all spent a week somehow engaging with media. The results were astounding. Out of the 40 some students,  they spent a total of 2164 hours with media during their average week. This includes TV, Internet, Video Games, Radio, Magazines and Newspapers. Pastor Joshua proposed a 5 hour media fast for this week where the students would give up 5 hours this week where they would instead focus those hours on reading the Word and Prayer.  The good news for the parents of younger children is that your kids are currently forming what they know to be acceptable not only in the amount of time with media but also what media is acceptable. Now is the time to help your children learn what you want them to know about media, because if you're not teaching them, someone else already is.
